TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that both perspectives present advantages, disadvantages, positive and negative points, considering that the chosen method must be adequate to the question of a certain research.
Abstract: Given the lack of dialogue between qualitative and quantitative researchers, this article assumes an "ecumenical" position. The text argues that both perspectives present advantages, disadvantages, positive and negative points, considering that the chosen method must be adequate to the question of a certain research. The paper presents some distinctions between qualitative and quantitative research. Next it points out the complexity of qualitative research in terms of its underlying assumptions, as well as data collection, transcription and analysis. Next, quality criteria for qualitative research are considered. The paper closes with a discussion of implications for research when choosing qualitative research and/or quantitative research.

TL;DR: In this article, the Subjective Well-Being Scale (EBES) was answered by 795 participants (mean age = 35.6 years old; standard deviation = 4.83).
Abstract: There are few valid measures of subjective well-being adapted to the Brazilian population. In this study, several items were elaborated for the development of an instrument to measure the three major components of subjective well-being: satisfaction with life, positive affect and negative affect. The Subjective Well-Being Scale (EBES) was answered by 795 participants (mean age = 35.6 years old; standard deviation = 4.83). Principal components and factor analysis of their answers (extratcion of principal components - PAF and direct oblimin rotation) revealed the expected three factors: positive affect (21 items, explaining 24.3% of the variance, alpha = 0.95); negative affect (26 items, 24.9% of the variance, alpha = 0.95) and satisfaction-dissatisfaction with life (15 items, 21.9% of the variance, alpha = 0.90). Together, these three factors explained 44.16% of the total variance of the construct. The 69 items of the EBES were further analyzed using Item Response Theory (IRT). All the results supported the construct validity of the Subjective Well-Being Scale.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present two traditional views and a new conception about well-being, and suggest an articulation, based on positive psychology proposition, in order to broaden the understanding of factors that contribute to promote a healthy existence.
Abstract: The definition of health includes well-being as a prime concept. Following it, there are different theoretical propositions to well-being in literature. This article presents two traditional views and a new conception about well-being. First of all, theoretical basis that sustains subjective well-being is revised. Conceptions about psychological well-being that draw the beginning about positive psychology are showed in the second section. Next, the concept of well-being at work is formulated ponting out your component, which were established in positive links between job and organization. In the end, it is suggested an articulation, based on positive psychology proposition, in order to broaden the understanding of factors that contribute to promote a healthy existence.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the alterations in the family network during transitions to parenthood due to the birth of babies and find that the most important support came from their husbands or partners.
Abstract: The social support network is essential to the individual and his/her family when they face normative and non-normative transitions throughout the developmental process. This article aims to describe the alterations in the family network during transitions to parenthood due to the birth of babies. Fifteen working class fathers and their wives/partners from two groups (A: Pregnant mothers; B: Mothers with babies aged from one to six months) answered a questionnaire and a guide of a semi-structured interview. According to the mothers, the increase of psychological support was considered the main alteration in the network; to the fathers, it was the increase of financial and material help. All mothers reported that the most important support came from their husbands or partners. Our data suggest that it is necessary to know about the relationships between the family subsystems and the social context in which the families are embedded in order to better understand the alterations in the social support network and in the father's engagement in the family during transitions to parenthood.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the factorial structure of the Brazilian version of the Ways of Coping Scale (Gimenes & Queiroz, 1997) that measures coping strategies people use when facing specific stressors.
Abstract: The goal of this study was to investigate the factorial structure of the Brazilian version of the Ways of Coping Scale (Gimenes & Queiroz, 1997) that measures coping strategies people use when facing specific stressors. The sample of 409 male and female adults was divided into two groups: 252 reported one major stressor related to a real problem in their everyday activities and the other 157 reported and described the suffering of a chronic disease. A factor analysis with principal axis method and orthogonal rotation, extracted four factors: coping strategies based on the stressor, coping strategies based on the emotion, religiosity/fantasy thinking and search for social support. Comparisons between the two samples suggested different possibilities for the development of research and intervention in the clinical work aimed at the management of stress by different type of patients.
