In the present days, remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) techniques are comprehensive tools for the assessment of water resource, its management and conservation. In this study, remote sensing and GIS techniques are taken into consideration for zonation of different groundwater prospects of Pravara basin. Several contributing factors in which groundwater potential of an area entirely or partially depends such as lithology, geomorphology, slope, soil, lineament density, drainage density, land use and rainfall are assessed individually as well as together for making the different groundwater prospect maps through influencing factor (IF) and frequency ratio (FR) techniques. In ArcGIS software, all these thematic layers are prepared using different satellite imageries and conventional data sets, obtained from different sources. All these layers are transformed into high-resolution raster format and meshed together in GIS environment using IF and FR methods. Groundwater prospect maps are constructed as a result of overlay analysis. Based on the constructed map of groundwater prospect zones, as a result of this study, the study area is divided into five categories of different groundwater potential zones: very high, high, moderate, low and very low. Validation of the resultant maps has shown that frequency ratio technique is having higher accuracy (AUC = 73%) compared to the influencing factors (AUC = 69%). The present study of groundwater zonation provides a simple and less time-consuming technique; also, the results can directly be used for planning and sustainable management in Pravara basin.

Groundwater potential mapping using geospatial techniques: a case study of Dhungeta-Ramis sub-basin, Ethiopia

The identification of suitable groundwater potential zonation was prepared using remote sensing and GIS techniques. Drainage pattern map were generated from satellite images using Arc GIS software. This study area was demarcated the groundwater exploration sites and artificial recharges structure with help of groundwater potential zonation map. The assessment of groundwater potential zonation was generated by integrated data like Slope, Hydro-geomorphic, land use/land cover, digital elevation maps with the help of remote sensing, GIS techniques and field verification. The Geomorphology, Land use and Land cover maps were prepared from Linear Self Imagine Scanning Sensor (LISS-III) satellite images with 23.5 m resolution using Arc GIS 10.3 software. The different kinds of thematic maps were integrated for assessment of groundwater potential zonation in basaltic hard rock terrain. These thematic maps of classes assigned weight ages using overlay analysis method. The groundwater potential zonation map was prepared using thematic maps for groundwater development. These thematic maps were assign numerical values like 1–10 using Arc GIS software 10.3. The groundwater potential zone classes has been shown like poor, moderate, good and excellent, which can be utilized for new sites of groundwater exploration and artificial recharges structures. The artificial recharge map generated from groundwater potential zonation using remote sensing and GIS technology. The groundwater potential zonation and artificial recharge maps may be useful for soil and water conservation project, watershed development programs and groundwater resources management in basaltic rock area.

Assessment of groundwater potential zonation of Mahesh River basin Akola and Buldhana districts, Maharashtra, India using remote sensing and GIS techniques

The present research work accentuates the hydrogeological evaluation for Devdari watershed of Maharashtra, Central India, using remote sensing, GIS, and multi influencing factor (MIF). The thematic layers of land use/land cover, groundwater depth, slope, drainage, flow direction, flow accumulation and geomorphology were prepared using IRS-LISS-III satellite data coupled with Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data on 23.50 and 30 m spatial resolution, respectively. The raster layers of these themes were estimated by employing ArcGIS software 10.3 and multi-influencing factor method and subsequently assigned with the relative weights as per their groundwater potential characteristics. For acknowledgement of the groundwater potential map, all the thematic layers and their respective weightage values were subjected to weighted overlay analysis (WOA) method. The evolved map demonstrates six groundwater potential zones in the study area, i.e., poor to nil (0.27 km2), very poor (0.95 km2), poor (17.67 km2), moderate (0.33 km2), good (9.51 km2), very good (14.665 km2) and excellent (1.84 km2). A field check survey was carried out to ascertain the validity of groundwater potential maps. The results of study area disclose that the area of watershed with poor, moderate and good-to-excellent groundwater potential zones is evaluated to allow precipitated water to infiltrate into subsurface and finally contribute to groundwater recharge in the watershed area.

An integrated approach to delineate the groundwater potential zones in Devdari watershed area of Akola district, Maharashtra, Central India

Abstract The change detection and land use and land cover (LULC) maps are more important powerful forces behind numerous ecological systems and fallow land. The current research focuses on demarcating the spatiotemporal LULC changes, NDVI and change detections maps. These effects directly affect the ecosystem, land resources, cropping pattern and agriculture. LULC assessment and surveillance are essential for long-term planning and sustainable use of natural resources. However, we have developed the soft computing machine learning algorithm for mapping land use and land cover based on the Google earth engine (GEE) platform and change detection mapping done by SAGA GIS software. It is significantly used for ecological safety and planning under various climate variations. To accurately describe the land use and land cover classes with changes are identified in the area. This area exclusively uses the multitemporal Landsat-5 (30 m) and Sentinel-2 (10 m) imageries in LULC mapping. The GEE is a cloud-computing platform with the prevailing classification ability of random forest (RF) models to make five-year interval LULC maps for 2010, 2015 and 2020. To unique multiple RF models established as a classifier in the algorithm created by JavaScript and GEE. SAGA GIS has provided the best platform for detecting changes in land use and land cover classes. NDVI maps are created based on the cloud-based platform. These maps value ranges between −0.68 to −0.15, 0.76 to −0.29 and 0.66 to −0.11 in 2010, 2015 and 2020. Experimental outcomes indicate five classes such as water bodies, built up, barren, cropland and fallow land during 2010, 2015 and 2020. The overall accuracy of User and Producer for 2010, 2015 and 2019 years in between 86.23%, 88.34%, 85.53% and 92.51%, 94.34% and 91.54%, respectively. We have observed that (2010, 2015 − 2020) agriculture and built-up land increased by 1040.76 ha, 1246.32 ha, 1500.93 ha and 34.96 ha, 37.08 ha, 42.58 ha, respectively. Other side degraded land, fallow land, waterbodies areas (953.19 ha, 679.23 ha, 937.24 ha and 1385.73 ha, 1513.53 ha, 991.08 ha and 32.85 ha, 21.33 ha, 25.66 ha) are increased during the year of 2010, 2015 and 2020, respectively. While results have been done by GEE cloud platform and remote sensing data, this developed algorithm easily classified the land use maps from Landsat-5 and Sentinel-2 TM imagery in the machine learning approach. The determined 30-m and 10-m three-year LULC maps are made-up to deliver vital data on the changes, monitoring and understanding of which types of LULC classes and changes have occupied a place in the Rahuri area.

In semi-arid regions, sustainable water change will help boost quality of soil, and drinking and irrigation water, and this chapter proposes a strategy for the development of land and water resources for sustainable watershed management. The main aim of the study is to directly impact the effects of climate change on groundwater, sustainable farming, and surface water. The planning of artificial groundwater recharge sites relies on zoned mapping. Remote sensing and GIS software is used to demarcate ground and artificial refilling sites. Groundwater and artificial recharge planning maps were created and weighted overlay evaluation methods used for integrated data such as soil types, land capacities, soil pitches, land use/land cover and soil drainage. The maps were classified by Arc GIS software 10.1 with numerical values 1–10.

Sustainable Watershed Development Planning

Planning of conservation measures for watershed management and development is the method of preparing and implementing plans in different projects to maintain and raise watershed management functions which otherwise affect the plants, animal and human communities inside watershed boundary.The geospatial technologies like remote sensing and GIS, GPS are useful for fast and cost effective study of different applications with accuracy in planning. It also gives a good quality perspective for understanding the problems and therefore useful for planners for better result for sustainable water resource development and management. The main focus of the study is to develop the land and water resource development plan and environmental management for groundwater recharge development using Geospatial technology in Patur watershed which is situated in Akola district of Maharashtra. In this study various types of thematic maps have been generated from satellite images using remote sensing and GIS technology. These thematic maps were prepared from different types of data sets like IRSLISS-III multispectral images, SRTM data with 30 m resolution and Survey of India Topo sheet.The thematic maps for GIS analysis were created by image processing of the raw data using geospatial technology. A particular importance is laid on the planning of conservation measures for land and water resources management plan mainly based on the land use/ land cover, geology, geomorphology and slope of the Patur watershed area. The planning of conservation activity should be important for ecological development and management at the forest area in the Patur watershed.From the final output of these study different conservation measures/structures like recharge wells, farm ponds, CNB, gully plug, CCT and other soil and water conservation structures have been suggested for groundwater recharge development, environmental management and to control soil erosion from the watershed area with reference to remote sensing and GIS data compared with ground truth.
