Learning information from a single or a few samples is called few-shot learning. This learning method will solve deep learning’s dependence on a large sample. Deep learning achieves few-shot learning through meta-learning: “how to learn by using previous experience”. Therefore, this paper considers how the deep learning method uses meta-learning to learn and generalize from a small sample size in image classification. The main contents are as follows. Practicing learning in a wide range of tasks enables deep learning methods to use previous empirical knowledge. However, this method is subject to the quality of feature extraction and the selection of measurement methods supports set and the target set. Therefore, this paper designs a multi-scale relational network (MSRN) aiming at the above problems. The experimental results show that the simple design of the MSRN can achieve higher performance. Furthermore, it improves the accuracy of the datasets within fewer samples and alleviates the overfitting situation. However, to ensure that uniform measurement applies to all tasks, the few-shot classification based on metric learning must ensure the task set’s homologous distribution.

A Few Shot Classification Methods Based on Multiscale Relational Networks

Accurate identification of siblings through face recognition is a challenging task. This is predominantly because of the high degree of similarities among the faces of siblings. In this study, we investigate the use of state-of-the-art deep learning face recognition models to evaluate their capacity for discrimination between sibling faces using various similarity indices. The specific models examined for this purpose are FaceNet, VGGFace, VGG16, and VGG19. For each pair of images provided, the embeddings have been calculated using the chosen deep learning model. Five standard similarity measures, namely, cosine similarity, Euclidean distance, structured similarity, Manhattan distance, and Minkowski distance, are used to classify images looking for their identity on the threshold defined for each of the similarity measures. The accuracy, precision, and misclassification rate of each model are calculated using standard confusion matrices. Four different experimental datasets for full-frontal-face, eyes, nose, and forehead of sibling pairs are constructed using publicly available HQf subset of the SiblingDB database. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the chosen deep learning models to distinguish siblings based on the full-frontal-face and cropped face areas vary based on the face area compared. It is observed that VGGFace is best while comparing the full-frontal-face and eyes-the accuracy of classification being with more than 95% in this case. However, its accuracy degrades significantly when the noses are compared, while FaceNet provides the best result for classification based on the nose. Similarly, VGG16 and VGG19 are not the best models for classification using the eyes, but these models provide favorable results when foreheads are compared.

A Study of Deep Learning-Based Face Recognition Models for Sibling Identification

Abstract The goal of Facial Kinship Verification (FKV) is to automatically determine whether two individuals have a kin relationship or not from their given facial images or videos. It is an emerging and challenging problem that has attracted increasing attention due to its practical applications. Over the past decade, significant progress has been achieved in this new field. Handcrafted features and deep learning techniques have been widely studied in FKV. The goal of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive review of the problem of FKV. We cover different aspects of the research, including problem definition, challenges, applications, benchmark datasets, a taxonomy of existing methods, and state-of-the-art performance. In retrospect of what has been achieved so far, we identify gaps in current research and discuss potential future research directions.

Facial Kinship Verification: A Comprehensive Review and Outlook

Component-based metric learning for fully automatic kinship verification

As a crucial task for video analysis, social relation recognition from characters provides intelligent applications with great potential to better understand the behaviors or emotions of human beings. Most existing methods mainly focus on training models from a large amount of labeled data. However, labeling social relations in videos is time-consuming. To solve this problem, we propose a Pre-trained Multimodal Feature Learning (PMFL) framework for self-supervised learning from unlabeled video data, and then transfer the pre-trained PMFL to downstream social relationship recognition task. First, the space-time interaction between visual instances, and cross-modal interaction between visual and textual information provide important cues for social relation understanding. To incorporate these cues, we design a Multimodal Instance Interaction Transformer (MIIT), which consists of two Transformers to capture intra-modal and cross-modal information interaction, respectively. Second, to better endow PMFL with the capability of learning visual and textual semantic features, we pre-train it via two tasks: Masked Action Feature Regression (MAFR) and Masked Object Label Classification (MOLC). These tasks can help learn both intra-modal and cross-modal semantic information. After fine-tuning PMFL from pre-trained parameters, it achieves the state-of-the-art results on a public benchmark.
