Review and intercomparison of operational methods for the determination of the mixing height

The characteristics of haze layers, which were visually observed over the central Amazon Basin during many of the Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment 2A flights in July/August 1985, were investigated by remote and in situ measurements, using the broad range of instrumentation and sampling equipment on board the Electra aircraft. It was found that these layers strongly influenced the chemical and optical characteristics of the atmosphere over the eastern Amazon Basin. Relative to the regional background, the concentrations of CO, CO2, O3, and NO were significantly elevated in the plumes and haze layers, with the NO/CO ratio in fresh plumes much higher than in the aged haze layers. The haze aerosol was composed predominantly of organic material, NH4, K(+), NO3(-), SO4(2-), and organic anions (formate, acetate, and oxalate).

Biomass‐burning emissions and associated haze layers over Amazonia

The boundary layer chemistry over the Amazon forest during the dry season is simulated with a photochemical model. Results are in good agreement with measurements of isoprene, NO, ozone, and organic acids. Photochemical reactions of biogenic isoprene and NOx can supply most of the ozone observed in the boundary layer. Production of ozone is very sensitive to the availability of NOx, but is insensitive to the isoprene source strength. High concentrations of total odd nitrogen (NOy) are predicted for the planetary boundary layer, about 1 ppb in the mixed layer and 0.75 ppb in the convective cloud layer. Most of the odd nitrogen is present as PAN-type species, which are removed by dry deposition to the forest. The observed daytime variations of isoprene are explained by a strong dependence of the isoprene emission flux on sun angle. Nighttime losses of isoprene exceed rates of reaction with NO3 and O3 and appear to reflect dry-deposition processes. The 24-hour averaged isoprene emission flux is calculated to be 38 mg/sq m per day. Photooxidation of isoprene could account for a large fraction of the CO enrichment observed in the boundary layer under unpolluted conditions and could constitute an important atmospheric source of formic acid, methacrylic acid, and pyruvic acid.

Photochemistry of biogenic emissions over the Amazon forest

The concentrations of formic and acetic acids in the gas phase, atmospheric aerosol, and rainwater samples collected in Amazonia at ground level and in the atmosphere during the Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment in July/August 1985 were analyzed by ion exchange chromatography. The diurnal behavior of both acids at ground level and their vertical distribution in the forest canopy point to the existence of vegetative sources as well as to production by chemical reactions in the atmosphere. The concentrations of formic and acetic acids in the gas phase were about 2 orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding concentrations in the atmospheric aerosol. In rainwater, the total formate and acetate represented about one half of the anion equivalents, in contrast to less than 10 percent of the soluble anionic equivalents contributed by these acids in the atmospheric aerosol. The observed levels of these ions in rainwater are considered to be the result of a combination of chemical reactions in hydrometeors and the scavenging of the gaseous acids by cloud droplets.

Formic and acetic acid over the central Amazon region, Brazil: 1. Dry season

Wavelet analysis is applied to airborne infrared lidar data to obtain an objective determination of boundaries in aerosol backscatter that are associated with boundary layer structure. This technique allows high-resolution spatial variability of planetary boundary layer height and other structures to be derived in complex, multilayered atmospheres. The technique is illustrated using data from four different lidar systems deployed on four different field campaigns. One case illustrates high-frequency retrieval of the top of a strongly convective boundary layer. A second case illustrates the retrieval of multiple layers in a complex, stably stratified region of the lower troposphere. The method is easily modified to allow for varying aerosol distributions and data quality. Two more difficult cases, data that contain a great deal of instrumental noise and a cloud-topped convective layer, are described briefly. An Objective Method for Deriving Atmospheric Structure from Airborne Lidar Observations

The structure and growth of the atmospheric mixed layer over the Amazonian rain forest were examined using measurements obtained during the NASA Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment. Measurements of temperature, moisture, and horizontal wind were carried out in and above the mixed layer by means of a tethered balloon, rawinsonde, and aircraft; fluxes of sensible and latent heat were measured at the top of the canopy. It was found that the mixing layer grows rapidly, at 5-8 cm/sec, soon after sunrise to a mean maximum height of 1200 m by 1300 LT; during undisturbed conditions, mixed layer heights of 1000 are common between 1000 and 1600 LT. No horizontal inhomogeneities in the mixed layer structure or depth were found over large distances. A simple mixed layer model was applied to show how fluxes of species might be estimated using only quantities measured at the surface and prescribing an initial condition and boundary condition for the mixed layer.
