Low flow hydrology: a review

The study of fish concentrations and sediment inventories in 19 European high mountain lakes (40-67 degrees N) shows that a fraction of organochlorine compounds (OCs), the less volatile compounds (LVC; subcooled liquid vapor pressure < or = 10(-2.5) Pa), are trapped in the higher locations. This general trend is not significantly influenced by possible local sources. Compound distribution is related to average air temperatures. The phase-change pseudoenthalpies calculated from the sediment inventories closely match the summed theoretical volatilization and dissolution enthalpies. This fractionation effect is responsible for the accumulation of high concentrations of the LVC, the more persistent and toxic according to literature data, in organisms inhabiting sites far from the locations of synthesis or use.

A proposed National Water-Quality Assessment Program, described in this report, would contribute to the Nation's need for better information on the status, trends, and causes of water-quality conditions across the Nation. The assessments would be conducted through an aggregation of individual studies of key river basins and aquifer systems to provide water-quality information that is useful in understanding and managing these important water resources, as well as answering national questions about water quality.

Polychlorinated biphenyl hazards to fish, wildlife, and invertebrates: a synoptic review

PCB was used in the manufacture of electrical equipment at two General Electric Company (GE) facilities located on the upper Hudson River about 1 km apart in Fort Edward and Hudson Falls (Washington Co.) New York. Discharges of PCB from these plants resulted in concentrations in bottom sediments of the Hudson River which now exceed those of other major rivers by about two orders of magnitude and those of small remote streams by more than three orders of magnitude. Intensive monitoring was initiated in 1977 by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to ascertain the magnitude of and trends in contaminant conditions of biotic and physical strata. The paper summarizes PCB trends from 1977 to 1981 in three major monitoring components - water, multiplate residues and fish.

From purpose and scope: The main purpose of this monitoring was to gather several years of data on PCB concentrations preparatory to removal of contaminated sediments by dredging, which was originally scheduled for the early 1980's. Plans for dredging and disposal of sediments are currently being reevaluated. This report examines the contribution and transport of PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls) from various reaches of the Hudson River and the changes in PCB concentration since 1977, when discharge was terminated.
