Although malls have been a topic of interest to marketing researchers for at least 35 years, the attraction between malls and Generation Y consumers has received little interest from marketing academics. This study focuses on the attitudes that the older segment of Generation Y consumers (19‐25) have toward a mall, and on their consumption motivation. Key findings include that Generation Y consumers are more likely to be objectively rather than socially motivated to consume. The findings also suggest that objective motivations to consume predict an individual consumer's perception of a shopping mall's ambience, layout, and his or her involvement in the shopping process. Social motivations to consume predict perceptions of a mall's ambience, design, variety, and excitement, as well as the consumer's desire to stay and intent to return to the mall. Managerial implications include using objective information, such as price‐oriented promotions, when trying to attract older Generation Y consumers.

Consumer perceptions of retail store attributes for a set of particular stores were examined to determine their effect on store preference. Respondents rated 13 stores. Four variables were found to affect store preference using forward stepwise logistic regression: type of clothing desired in stock, outside store appearance, shopping hours, and advertising. Significance of the effect of store attributes on store preference varied by store type. In addition, associations between customer perception of store attributes, education and age were observed. Implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed.

PROTESTS OVER HIGHWAY LOCATION, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND RELATED FACTORS HAVE BEEN AND ARE NATIONWIDE, PARTLY BECAUSE OF A BELIEF THAT HIGHWAYS ARE PLANNED PRIMARILY IN TERMS OF RATHER RIGID ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS TO THE VIRTUAL EXCLUSION OF ENVIRONMENTAL, ATTITUDINAL, AND OTHER HUMAN RELATED FACTORS. THE ATTITUDES AND GOAL PREFERENCES OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CITIZENS NEED TO BE MORE EFFECTIVELY INTEGRATED INTO PLANNING FOR HIGHWAY INVESTMENTS, AND THE GOAL PRIORITIES OF CITIZENS RELATIVE TO THE LOCATION, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS NEED TO BE ASCERTAINED AND INTEGRATED WITH THE GOALS OF THE HIGHWAY PLANNERS. THE BASIC OBJECTIVE OF THIS EXPLORATORY RESEARCH WAS TO DEVELOP AND TEST A METHODOLOGY FOR DETERMINING GOALS THAT HAVE THE HIGHEST PRIORITY IN TERMS OF BOTH DESIRABILITY AND IMPORTANCE AS PERCEIVED BY A REPRESENTATIVE CROSS SAMPLE OF PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND PRIVATE CITIZENS. SOCIAL AND AESTHETIC GOALS, ECONOMIC AND FISCAL GOALS, AND PHYSICAL GOALS WERE RANKED BY TWO GROUPS OF RESPONDENTS.
