A holistic model of wellness and prevention over the life span was presented by T. J. Sweeney and J. M. Witmer (1991) and J. M.
Witmer and T. J. Sweeney (1992). Recent advances in research and theory related to wellness support modifications of the
original model. The foundation for the model is examined, research related to each component is explored, and implications for
use of the model as a basis for counseling interventions are presented.

A Spiritual Strategy for Counseling and Psychotherapy

Critical Thinking and Education

Spiritual values in the workplace, increasingly discussed and applied in the business ethics literature, can be viewed from an individual, organizational, or interactive perspective. The following study examined previously unexplored workplace spirituality outcomes. Using data collected from five samples consisting of full-time workers taking graduate coursework, results indicated that perceptions of organizational-level spirituality (“organizational spirituality”) appear to matter most to attitudinal and attachment-related outcomes. Specifically, organizational spirituality was found to be positively related to job involvement, organizational identification, and work rewards satisfaction, and negatively related to organizational frustration. Personal spirituality was positively related to intrinsic, extrinsic, and total work rewards satisfaction. The interaction of personal spirituality and organizational spirituality was found related to total work rewards satisfaction. Future workplace spirituality research directions are discussed.

Workplace Values and Outcomes: Exploring Personal, Organizational, and Interactive Workplace Spirituality

Spiritual wellness is an emerging area of interest in counseling. It still lacks clarity, however, in definition and application. To increase familiarity with and encourage counselor intervention regarding the spiritual dimension, the authors of this article attempt to define more clearly the concept of spiritual health and to describe ways to use techniques for the enhancement of spiritual wellness and the advancement of spiritual development.

Contemporary Women's Health: Issues for Today and the Future

This paper addresses some theoretical implications regarding the concept of spirituality and offers some practical suggestions for including spiritual health in the health education program. A traditionally accepted model of health (Hettler, 1979), the six dimensions of wellness are the intellectual, emotional, physical, social, occupational, and spiritual dimensions. In this model, spiritual health is considered as one of six equally important dimensions of wellness. A contrasting view, however, is that spiritual health the source of all the other dimensions, and that spirituality is tne over-arching umbrella covering all of the other aspects of health, representing the essence of who and what the individual is. An activity is outlined that provides students with an opportunity to discuss thoughts about spirituality as presented by a variety of authors. An individual's selection of a quotation is assumed to be guided by a personal understanding and view of spirituality. The quotation is read within the group and each student expresses an interpretation of the meaning and implications for spiritual health. The activity culminates with guided discassion by the entire group, The 14 quotations, and their sources, are appended along with 5 transparency masters. (JD)
