Journal ArticleDOI
Understanding and constructing shared spaces with mixed-reality boundaries
TL;DR: A taxonomy that classifies current approaches to shared spaces according to the three dimensions of transportation, artificiality, and spatiality is introduced and the technique of mixed-reality boundaries is introduced as a way of joining real and virtual spaces together in order to address some of these problems.
Journal ArticleDOI
VR-VIBE: A Virtual Environment for Co-operative Information Retrieval
TL;DR: The essence of VR‐VIBE is that multiple users can explore the results of applying several simultaneous queries to a corpus of documents, arranging the queries into a spatial framework, and shows the relative attraction of each document to each query by its spatial position.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Shared spaces: transportation, artificiality, and spatiality
TL;DR: An example of a mixed reality called the Internet Foyer is presented, an application which provides a unified entry point into an organisation's physical and electronic environments and which supports awareness and chance encounters between the occupants of physical and synthetic space.
Journal ArticleDOI
Visualising and populating the Web: Collaborative virtual environments for browsing, searching and inhabiting Webspace
TL;DR: New services for accessing, exploring and collaborating via the World Wide Web are presented, based on the use of Collaborative Virtual Environment technology, which is used to create navigable 3-D graphical, textual, audio and video representations of the structure of the Web and also of its users.
Book ChapterDOI
Distributed Extensible Virtual Reality Laboratory (DEVRL)
Mel Slater,Martin Usoh,Steve Benford,Dave Snowdon,Chris Brown,Tom Rodden,Gareth Smith,Sylvia Wilbur +7 more
TL;DR: An ongoing project in the UK to establish a framework for distributed virtual reality applications, the three applications (physics teaching, collaborative information browsing, and geometric design), the methodology for evaluation, and the network infrastructure.
