Introduction to Multiagent Systems

This paper introduces concepts and algorithms of feature selection, surveys existing feature selection algorithms for classification and clustering, groups and compares different algorithms with a categorizing framework based on search strategies, evaluation criteria, and data mining tasks, reveals unattempted combinations, and provides guidelines in selecting feature selection algorithms. With the categorizing framework, we continue our efforts toward-building an integrated system for intelligent feature selection. A unifying platform is proposed as an intermediate step. An illustrative example is presented to show how existing feature selection algorithms can be integrated into a meta algorithm that can take advantage of individual algorithms. An added advantage of doing so is to help a user employ a suitable algorithm without knowing details of each algorithm. Some real-world applications are included to demonstrate the use of feature selection in data mining. We conclude this work by identifying trends and challenges of feature selection research and development.

Toward integrating feature selection algorithms for classification and clustering

The goal of supervised learning is to build a concise model of the distribution of class labels in terms of predictor features. The resulting classifier is then used to assign class labels to the testing instances where the values of the predictor features are known, but the value of the class label is unknown. This paper describes various supervised machine learning classification techniques. Of course, a single chapter cannot be a complete review of all supervised machine learning classification algorithms (also known induction classification algorithms), yet we hope that the references cited will cover the major theoretical issues, guiding the researcher in interesting research directions and suggesting possible bias combinations that have yet to be explored.

Supervised Machine Learning: A Review of Classification Techniques

The aim of this study was to explore the impact of motion generated by ambulance patient management on the performance of two lightweight physiologic sensors. Two physiologic sensors were applied to pre-hospital patients. The first was the Contec Medical Systems CMS50FW finger pulse oximeter, monitoring heart rate (HR) and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). The second was the RESpeck respiratory rate (RR) sensor, which was wireless-enabled with a Bluetooth® Low Energy protocol. Sensor data were recorded from 16 pre-hospital patients, who were monitored for 21.2 ± 9.8 min, on average. Some form of error was identified on almost every HR and SpO2 trace. However, the mean proportion of each trace exhibiting error was <10 % (range <1–50 % for individual patients). There appeared to be no overt impact of the gross motion associated with road ambulance transit on the incidence of HR or SpO2 error. The RESpeck RR sensor delivered an average of 4.2 (±2.2) validated breaths per minute, but did not produce any validated breaths during the gross motion of ambulance transit as its pre-defined motion threshold was exceeded. However, this was many more data points than could be achieved using traditional manual assessment of RR. Error was identified on a majority of pre-hospital physiologic signals, which emphasised the need to ensure consistent sensor attachment in this unstable and unpredictable environment, and in developing intelligent methods of screening out such error.

In October 1975 we started a three year SRC supported project on "A Program to Solve Mechanics Problems Stated in English". This project is now beginning its third year and many of its initial objectives have been achieved. In this paper we briefly review the progress that has been made and discuss some of the more promising areas of research that we have uncovered.

Knowledge about knowledge: making decisions in mechanics problem solving

This paper provides a foundation for a pragmatically and empirically based model of the mechanisms involved in teachers’ speech act generation. Apart from some standard types of speech acts such as questioning or asserting, teachers also make use of some complex acts which combine the qualities of other known types of speech acts. These complex acts may be crucial to our understanding of the relation between language and cognition and therefore it seems important to analyse and to classify such cases appropriately. Unfortunately traditional approaches to speech act classification (e.g. Austin, 1962; Grice, 1975; Searle, 1979) do not provide a fully satisfactory basis for such an analysis because they treat speech acts in terms of discrete categories. On the other hand, although a number of alternative, more socially-based approaches (Givon, 1989; Brown and Levinson, 1978; Spencer-Oatey, 1992) are very inspiring, they are often left in the sphere of speculations and untested intuitions. To remedy this problem we propose an exploratory study of which the aim is to provide empirical foundations for a new model of teachers’ speech act generation.
