Journal ArticleDOI
Altered intestinal tight junctions’ expression in patients with liver cirrhosis: a pathogenetic mechanism of intestinal hyperpermeability
Stelios F Assimakopoulos,Athanassios C. Tsamandas,Georgios I. Tsiaoussis,Elli Karatza,Christos Triantos,Constantine E Vagianos,Iris Spiliopoulou,Valeria Kaltezioti,Aristidis Charonis,Vassiliki N Nikolopoulou,Chrisoula D. Scopa,Konstantinos Thomopoulos +11 more
TL;DR: The expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins is altered in the intestinal mucosa of patients with liver cirrhosis and study its potential association with the stage of liver disease and the development of systemic endotoxemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Complications and risk factors related to the extent of surgery in thyroidectomy. Results from 2,043 procedures.
Stavros N. Karamanakos,Kostas B. Markou,Konstantinos Panagopoulos,Dionisios Karavias,Constantinos E. Vagianos,Chrisoula D. Scopa,Vassiliki Fotopoulou,Anna Liava,Konstantinos Vagenas +8 more
TL;DR: Despite the higher morbidity, total thyroidectomy is emerging as an attractive surgical option even for benign thyroid disease due to the risk of subclinical (occult) malignancy, the possibility of goiter relapse as well as of the increased risk of complications following reoperation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relative risk of cancer in sonographically detected thyroid nodules with calcifications.
Stavros K. Kakkos,Chrisoula D. Scopa,A. Chalmoukis,Dionissios A. Karachalios,John Spiliotis,John G. Harkoftakis,Dionissios Karavias,J. Androulakis,Apostolos G. Vagenakis +8 more
TL;DR: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the significance of sonographically detected thyroid calcifications in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
Journal Article
Histological comparison of autograft, allograft-DBM, xenograft, and synthetic grafts in a trabecular bone defect: an experimental study in rabbits.
Vasilis T Athanasiou,Dionysios J. Papachristou,Andreas Panagopoulos,Alkis Saridis,Chrisoula D. Scopa,Panagiotis Megas +5 more
TL;DR: Bovine xenograft showed better biological response than the other bone graft substitutes; however, more clinical studies are necessary to determine its overall effectiveness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathophysiology of increased intestinal permeability in obstructive jaundice.
TL;DR: Clinicians handling patients with obstructive jaundice should not neglect protecting the intestinal barrier function before, during and after intervention for the relief of this condition, which may improve their patients' outcome.
