Cataloguing practices from creation to use: A study of Cape Town Metropolitan Public Libraries in Western Cape Province, South Africa

This research explored the implementations and perceptions of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloguing standard in Europe. It refers to the development and implementation of the standard among Anglo-American libraries and draws comparisons between them. It examines the spread and application of RDA throughout Europe both by analysing the available literature and by conducting interviews with professionals at 12 European national libraries. The results highlight the issues faced by the European institutions and the unique perspectives that emerge from implementing RDA in different languages and cultures. European institutions demonstrate a higher level of involvement and interest in the development of RDA and a stronger desire to work towards RDA interoperability and alignment with the cultural heritage sector. The European implementation drives forward the internationalisation of RDA by actively seeking solutions to the issues in the new standard arising from the cultural and linguistic diversity.

La comunita bibliotecaria in Germania, Austria e nella Svizzera tedesca ha raggiunto alla fine del 2015 un obiettivo comune. Dopo due anni di intensa preparazione, lo standard internazionale RDA e stato implementato e si e avviato il lavoro pratico. L'articolo descrive il progetto dal punto di vista della situazione organizzativa nei tre paesi e si concentra sugli obiettivi raggiunti e sul lavoro che resta ancora da fare. Offre inoltre una panoramica dell'impegno iniziale per allineare la gestione dei materiali speciali con RDA nelle nazioni di lingua tedesca e descrive le attivita associate al requisito specifico derivante dalla natura multilingue della Svizzera. Infine, l'articolo riferisce lo sviluppo strategico nei comitati internazionali RDA, come il RDA Steering Committee (RSC) e l'European RDA Interest Group (EURIG).

Modélisation et transformation des métadonnées de RERO en Linked Open Data

This survey sought to investigate how the transition to the new cataloging standard, Resource Description and Access (RDA), has been handled in one hundred of the largest US public libraries, specifically examining whether catalogers believe that some of RDA’s major goals have been met, and how some of the anticipated impacts of RDA implementation have been handled. A large majority of these libraries have implemented RDA for original cataloging, but respondents also generally believe that RDA has failed to meet some of its most important goals, primarily ease of use and cost-effectiveness.

RDA Implementation in Large US Public Libraries

The discussion on the internationalization of German library standards has a long tradition, and revived around the millennium change with the recognition that the standards used so far were no longer suitable for the current needs. Therefore, the Committee for Library Standards, a consortium consisting mainly of German regional library networks and large academic libraries, with Austrian and Swiss representatives, agreed on the changeover. The article will describe all relevant aspects of the transition to Resource Description and Access (RDA) within the German-speaking library community.
