The personal is political. It is a slogan that came to define feminist thought in the latter half of the 20th Century. Its provenance is not clear; Carol Hanisch is often given credit based on her 1970 article of that name, but even she says someone else said it first (Hanisch, 2006). Even so, the phrase “the personal is political” wonderfully summarizes an approach to feminist thought that relies on personal experience to problematize the workings of power and domination.

Die Beziehung zwischen Geschlecht und Bildungserfolg bildet eine kontroverse Thematik. Wahrend die second wave feminists (fruhe 1960er Jahre bis spate 1970er Jahre) den Bildungsmisserfolg von Madchen fokussierten, hat sich in den letzten Jahren eine internationale Sorge hinsichtlich des scheinbaren Bildungsmisserfolgs von Jungen herausgebildet. Diese Entwicklung geht soweit, dass viele Kommentatoren das Engagement in Medien und Politik zu diesem Thema inzwischen als moral panic bezeichnen. Die Debatte um den Bildungsmisserfolg der Jungen hat sich in Grosbritannien und Australien fest etablieren konnen und entwickelt sich auch in vielen anderen OECD-Nationen (Hayes und Lingard 2003; Francis und Skelton 2005; Jha und Kelleher 2006). Die Thematik ist auch zu einer Angelegenheit der Bildungspolitik geworden, was sich in einem beispiellosen Verbrauch an Energie, Ressourcen sowie Zielen und Empfehlungen an Schulen, das gender gap zu schliesen, manifestiert. Aus feministischer Perspektive werden derweil Bedenken laut, dass solche Masnahmen a) fehlgeleitet sind und b) die andauernden Bedurfnisse der Madchen marginalisieren. Dieser Beitrag zielt auf eine Analyse von Befunden zu Geschlecht und Bildungserfolg. Wir wollen einige Annahmen und Erklarungen zum Bildungsmisserfolg der Jungen herausgreifen, um zu einer ausgewogesneren Darstellung des Forschungsfeldes zu gelangen.

Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his ‘best and truest friend’. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight-years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father–daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina’s refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. He left her nearly £1 million and all his personal papers in his will. Georgina’s commitment to Dickens was unwavering but it is far from clear what he did to deserve such loyalty. There were several occasions when he misused her in order to protect his public reputation. Why did Georgina betray her once much-loved sister? Why did she fall out with her family and risk her reputation in order to stay with Dickens? And why did the Dickenses’ daughter Katey say it was ‘the greatest mistake ever’ to invite a sister-in-law to live with a family?
