Symplectic twist maps

Journal ArticleDOI

A note on Carnot geodesics in nilpotent Lie groups

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that strictly abnormal geodesics arise in graded nilpotent Lie groups, with a left invariant bracket-generating distribution, for which some Carnot geodecics are strictly abnormal and not normal in any subgroup.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Possible and the Actual in Phyllotaxis: Bridging the Gap between Empirical Observations and Iterative Models

TL;DR: New methods for the geometrical analysis of phyllotactic patterns and their comparison with patterns produced by simple, discrete dynamical systems are presented and the concept of ontogenetic graph is introduced as a parsimonious and mechanistically relevant representation of a pattern.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ghost Circles for Twist Maps

TL;DR: In this article, complete ordered invariant ghost circles are found for the gradient of the energy flow in the state space, containing the critical sets corresponding to the Birkhoff orbits of all rotation number.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phyllotaxis as geometric canalization during plant development

TL;DR: This Hypothesis article aims to provide an accessible overview of phyllotaxis, and to argue that the spiral patterns in plants are progressively canalized from local interactions of nascent organs, i.e. Fibonacci phylltaxis.
