The OmegaCAM wide-field imager will start operations at the ESO VLT Survey Telescope at Paranal in 2007. The photometric calibration of OmegaCAM data depends on standard-star measurements that cover the complete 1 × 1 FoV of OmegeaCAM. A catalog fullfilling this requirement for 8 Landolt equatorial fields, denoted the OmegaCAM Secondary Standards Catalog, will be constructed from OmegaCAM observations during the first year of operations. Here we present the ‘Preliminary Catalog’ which will be used to bootstrap the construction of the OmegaCAM Secondary Standards Catalog. Thus the Preliminary Catalog will be used to assess the performance of OmegaCAM+VST early-on. The catalog is based on WFC data from the INT.

The Future of Photometric, Spectrophotometric and Polarimetric Standardization

The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has been obtaining near- and far-ultraviolet images and spectra of the solar atmosphere since July 2013. IRIS is the highest resolution observatory to provide seamless coverage of spectra and images from the photosphere into the low corona. The unique combination of near- and far-ultraviolet spectra and images at sub-arcsecond resolution and high cadence allows the tracing of mass and energy through the critical interface between the surface and the corona or solar wind. IRIS has enabled research into the fundamental physical processes thought to play a role in the low solar atmosphere such as ion–neutral interactions, magnetic reconnection, the generation, propagation, and dissipation of waves, the acceleration of non-thermal particles, and various small-scale instabilities. IRIS has provided insights into a wide range of phenomena including the discovery of non-thermal particles in coronal nano-flares, the formation and impact of spicules and other jets, resonant absorption and dissipation of Alfvenic waves, energy release and jet-like dynamics associated with braiding of magnetic-field lines, the role of turbulence and the tearing-mode instability in reconnection, the contribution of waves, turbulence, and non-thermal particles in the energy deposition during flares and smaller-scale events such as UV bursts, and the role of flux ropes and various other mechanisms in triggering and driving CMEs. IRIS observations have also been used to elucidate the physical mechanisms driving the solar irradiance that impacts Earth’s upper atmosphere, and the connections between solar and stellar physics. Advances in numerical modeling, inversion codes, and machine-learning techniques have played a key role. With the advent of exciting new instrumentation both on the ground, e.g. the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and space-based, e.g. the Parker Solar Probe and the Solar Orbiter, we aim to review new insights based on IRIS observations or related modeling, and highlight some of the outstanding challenges.

A New View of the Solar Interface Region from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)

The 1.6-m New Solar Telescope (NST) has been used to observe the Sun for more than three years with ever
increasing capabilities as its commissioning phase winds down. The NST is the first facility-class solar telescope
built in the U.S. in a generation, and it has an off-axis design as is planned for the 4 m Advanced Technology
Solar Telescope. Lessons learned will be discussed. Current NST post-focus instrumentation includes adaptive
optics (AO) feeding photometric and near-IR polarimetric sytems, as well as an imaging spectrograph. On-going
instrumentation projects will be sketched, including Multi-Conjugate AO (MCAO), next generation (dual Fabry-
Perot) visible light and near-IR polarimeters and a fully cryogenic spectrograph. Finally, recent observational
results illustrating the high resolution capabilities of the NST will be shown.

The National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) will revolutionize our ability to measure, understand, and model the basic physical processes that control the structure and dynamics of the Sun and its atmosphere. The first-light DKIST images, released publicly on 29 January 2020, only hint at the extraordinary capabilities that will accompany full commissioning of the five facility instruments. With this Critical Science Plan (CSP) we attempt to anticipate some of what those capabilities will enable, providing a snapshot of some of the scientific pursuits that the DKIST hopes to engage as start-of-operations nears. The work builds on the combined contributions of the DKIST Science Working Group (SWG) and CSP Community members, who generously shared their experiences, plans, knowledge, and dreams. Discussion is primarily focused on those issues to which DKIST will uniquely contribute.

We present an overview of the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), its instruments, and support facilities. The 4 m aperture DKIST provides the highest-resolution observations of the Sun ever achieved. The large aperture of DKIST combined with state-of-the-art instrumentation provide the sensitivity to measure the vector magnetic field in the chromosphere and in the faint corona, i.e. for the first time with DKIST we will be able to measure and study the most important free-energy source in the outer solar atmosphere – the coronal magnetic field. Over its operational lifetime DKIST will advance our knowledge of fundamental astronomical processes, including highly dynamic solar eruptions that are at the source of space-weather events that impact our technological society. Design and construction of DKIST took over two decades. DKIST implements a fast (f/2), off-axis Gregorian optical design. The maximum available field-of-view is 5 arcmin. A complex thermal-control system was implemented in order to remove at prime focus the majority of the 13 kW collected by the primary mirror and to keep optical surfaces and structures at ambient temperature, thus avoiding self-induced local seeing. A high-order adaptive-optics system with 1600 actuators corrects atmospheric seeing enabling diffraction limited imaging and spectroscopy. Five instruments, four of which are polarimeters, provide powerful diagnostic capability over a broad wavelength range covering the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared spectrum. New polarization-calibration strategies were developed to achieve the stringent polarization accuracy requirement of 5×10−4. Instruments can be combined and operated simultaneously in order to obtain a maximum of observational information. Observing time on DKIST is allocated through an open, merit-based proposal process. DKIST will be operated primarily in “service mode” and is expected to on average produce 3 PB of raw data per year. A newly developed data center located at the NSO Headquarters in Boulder will initially serve fully calibrated data to the international users community. Higher-level data products, such as physical parameters obtained from inversions of spectro-polarimetric data will be added as resources allow.

<h3>ABSTRACT:</h3> On July 1, 2016, the Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra, Ghana became the site of an impromptu, yet noteworthy display of fashion. The occasion was the funeral of Ruth Botsio, a celebrated fashion icon and wife of the Independence-era politician and diplomat, Kojo Botsio. To symbolize her cultural and familial contributions, Botsio’s family commissioned a unique commemorative print, which altered the conventional funerary color scheme of black and red to reflect Botsio’s penchant for pink, resulting in a black fabric emblazoned with hot pink patterns. Taking inspiration from Doran Ross’s scholarly contributions to the field of Ghanaian art history, this essay analyzes the symbolism of Botsio’s commemorative print, attesting to the continued relevance of Herbert Cole and Ross’s concept of the visual-verbal nexus and the importance of examining Ghana’s textile arts. Additionally, Suzanne Gott’s (2009) exploration of Asante <i>poatwa</i> and fashionable funerary dress is referenced to acknowledge the potency of Botsio’s commemorative print in asserting elite status and social connections, whether actual or fictional. This sartorial disruption ultimately speaks to the inherent malleability of Ghanaian traditions and the continued innovations in Ghanaian dress practices.
