A global perspective on CMIP5 climate model biases

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated regional sea surface temperature biases across 22 climate models and found that they are linked to the large circulation system in the Atlantic Ocean, and that improvements to climate models will need to consider the impact of remote biases on regional processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Western Pacific Oscillator Paradigm for the El Niño-Southern Oscillation

TL;DR: In this paper, a data-based hypothesis on the mechanism of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is presented, which emphasizes the importance of off-equator sea surface temperature and sea level pressure variations west of the dateline for initiating equatorial easterly winds over the far western Pacific.
Journal ArticleDOI

ENSO variability and the eastern tropical Pacific: A review

TL;DR: A comprehensive review of the oceanography of the eastern tropical Pacific can be found in this article, where four requisite negative feedbacks have been proposed: reflected Kelvin waves at the ocean wes tern boundary, a discharge process due to Sverdrup transport, western Pacific wind-forced Kelvin waves, and anomalous zonal advections.

The Tropical Western Hemisphere Warm Pool

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest that a positive ocean-atmosphere feedback operating through longwave radiation and associated cloudiness is responsible for the Western Hemisphere warm pool (WHWP) SST anomalies.
