In this article we consider the major challenges that faces education at the beginning of the millennium due to the collapse of the Information Knowledge and Learning Society. Webegin by examining the concept information, the raw material that forms the basis of knowledge and communication between people. We will address then on the concepts of Knowledge and Learning, central in the development of a new global society that everyone can use to access and share information individually or in communities. We conclude by reflecting on the implications of the network society in education, stressing the responsibility that today's schools is to train a critical, creative, able to solve the problems of a globalized and highly competitive.

Sociedade da informação, do conhecimento e da aprendizagem: desafios para educação no século XXI

This paper presents an experience of internet integration in an Education Program of the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. The project was developed in the first semester of 2006/2007 and integrated 23 undergraduate students who attended Educational and Communication Technology (ECT) class. Students, in small groups, were encouraged to set up and maintain a weblog as a portfolio of the team work. Cooperative learning was the central object of study: students worked together to maximize their own and each other's learning. At the end of the semester students filled a five-point Likert scale online questionnaire evaluating four dimensions of the experience: a) weblogs as educational/communicational tools; b) weblogs in ECT course; c) weblogs and the future of the profession and, d) weblogs and cooperative learning. The results show up that weblogs are versatile educational tools that can promote learning whilst developing social skills.

Cooperative learning in higher education using weblogs : a study with undergraduate students of education in Portugal

In this paper we describe a collaborative learning experience with post graduate students attending a master degree course in Educational Technology in the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. The experienc e involved the use of wiki technology and explored advanced collaborative forms and participative assessment as part of the teaching method. We believed that learn ing would occur through social interaction generated by the exchange and sharing o f information and opinions among a peer group in an online learning community. During the 1 st semester of 2006/2007, sixteen master students developed a collaborative w iki. Artefacts and students perceptions of the new learning experience were eva luated and findings are presented as well as suggestions for further research.
