What literature review is not: diversity, boundaries and recommendations

General guidelines for conducting literature reviews often do not address the question of literature searches and dealing with a potentially large number of identified sources. These issues are specifically addressed by so-called systematic literature reviews (SLRs) that propose a strict protocol for the search and appraisal of literature. Moreover, SLRs are claimed to be a ‘standardized method’ for literature reviews that is replicable, transparent, objective, unbiased and rigorous, and thus superior to other approaches for conducting literature reviews. These are significant and consequential claims that – despite increasing adoption of SLRs – remained largely unnoticed in the information systems (IS) literature. The objective of this debate is to draw attention of the IS community to SLR’s claims, to question their justification and reveal potential risks of their adoption. This is achieved by first examining the origins of SLR and the prescribed SLR process and then by critically assessing their claims and implications. In this debate, we show that SLRs are applicable and useful for a very specific kind of literature review, a meta study that identifies and summarizes evidence from earlier research. We also demonstrate that the claims that SLRs provide superior quality are not justified. More importantly, we argue that SLR as a general approach to conducting literature reviews is highly questionable, concealing significant perils. The paper cautions that SLR could undermine critical engagement with literature and what it means to be scholarly in academic work.

Organizational information security policies: a review and research framework

Enterprise Content Management (ECM) focuses on managing all types of content being used in organizations. It is a convergence of previous approaches that focus on managing only particular types of content, as for example documents or web pages. In this paper, we present an overview of previous research by categorizing the existing literature. We show that scientific literature on ECM is limited and there is no consensus on the definition of ECM. Therefore, the literature review surfaced several ECM definitions that we merge into a more consistent and comprehensive definition of ECM. The Functional ECM Framework (FEF) provides an overview of the potential functionalities of ECM systems (ECMSs). We apply the FEF in three case studies. The FEF can serve to communicate about ECMSs, to understand them and to direct future research. It can also be the basis for a more formal reference architecture and it can be used as an assessment tool by practitioners for comparing the functionalities provided by existing ECMSs.

Reviewing Enterprise Content Management: a functional framework

There are
high expectations for Mobile Health to transform health into a sustainable and
prevention-based system. Unfortunately it has not
reached its scale of adoption many had hoped for, due to the existence of
adoption barriers. More insight into these barriers fosters adoption of mHealth
and the innovation it can bring to worldwide healthcare. This
study investigates the main barriers in the adoption of mHealth, their underlying causes
and their breakthrough possibilities. All the data are gathered from an international and
multi-stakeholder point of view. First of all we tried to
identify the main barriers by doing an international literature study. Second
of all we asked Dutch mHealth Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to rank the barriers
to importance. These KOLs were from different stakeholder groups; policy-makers,
users and developers. At last we asked the KOLs in interviews for underlying
causes and breakthrough opportunities of the barriers. Eventually twelve main adoption barriers emerged.
According to literature and to the KOLs the most important barriers are “Integration and interoperability” and “Business case”. An underlying cause for
the barrier “Integration and
interoperability” might be the active closed power system of technology
suppliers, which exists in the Netherlands. Furthermore there seems to be a
difference in the importance of the barriers “Privacy and security” and “Conservative
culture” when perceptions of Dutch KOLS and
international literature are compared. Within the stakeholders-groups, the KOLs
think differently about the importance of the barriers “Visionless development” and “Competing
payment mechanism”. The Dutch healthcare insurers could take a more leading
role in the fragmented landscape of mHealth in the Netherlands, by
strategically funding new initiatives that use open standards and deliver
better value for end-users. Other chances might lie in the international cooperation between countries to
overcome certain barriers.

Adopting Health Apps, What’s Hindering Doctors and Patients?

This paper discusses the selection of a preferred strategy for implementing an IT infrastructure from a range of competing alternatives. The model presented here combines the use of an evidential reasoning approach based on the Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions with real options analysis. We discuss the combined use of both theories and show that combining the Dempster-Shafer theory with real options analysis provides flexible support that takes account of the multi-dimensional nature of implementation decisions. We also go into the fundamental requirements that need to be met when selecting a strategy for implementing an IT infrastructure. We conclude by outlining a number of the model's limitations.

Impacts of implementing Enterprise Content Management Systems

This paper presents the results of a case study on the impacts of implementing Enterprise Content Management Systems (ECMSs) in an organization. It investigates how these impacts are influenced by the functionalities of an ECMS and by the nature of the ECMS-supported processes. The results confirm that both factors do influence the impacts. Further, the results indicate that the implementation of an ECMS can change the nature of ECMS-supported processes. It is also demonstrated that the functionalities of an ECMS need to be aligned with the nature of the processes of the implementing organization. This finding confirms previous research from the Workflow Management domain and extends it to the ECM domain. Finally, the case study results show that implementing an ECMS to support rather ‘static’ processes can be expected to cause more and stronger impacts than the support of ‘flexible’ processes.
