TL;DR: Preliminary evidence of the validity of the Adherence Estimator supports its intended use to segment patients on their propensity to adhere to a newly-prescribed prescription medication.
Abstract: Objective: To conceptualize, develop, and provide preliminary psychometric evidence for the Adherence Estimator – a brief, three-item proximal screener for the likelihood of non-adherence to prescription medications (medication non-fulfillment and non-persistence) for chronic disease.Research design and methods: Qualitative focus groups with 140 healthcare consumers and two internet-based surveys of adults with chronic disease, comprising a total of 1772 respondents, who were self-reported medication adherers, non-persisters, and non-fulfillers. Psychometric tests were performed on over 150 items assessing 14 patient beliefs and skills hypothesized to be related to medication non-adherence along a proximal–distal con-tinuum. Psychometric tests included, but were not limited to, known-groups discriminant validity at the scale and item level. The psychometric analyses sought to identify: (1) the specific multi-item scales that best differentiated self-reported adherers from self-reported non-adherer...

TL;DR: In the present analysis of the validity of the Adherence Estimator in predicting adherence, baseline propensity to adhere to medications prescribed for chronic diseases was statistically associated with several measures of adherence and persistence, as derived from pharmacy claims data, over a 9-month period.

TL;DR: The PAM-D has substantial reliability and validity in a low-income, inner-city population of Type 2 diabetes patients and may be valuable for understanding multidimensional perceptions driving patients’ treatment preferences.

TL;DR: Adherence Estimator as discussed by the authors is a system for determining risk groups for patients according to their propensity to adhere to a medication prescription by scoring and interpreting responses to prescription survey questions in order to assign patients to a high risk group, a medium risk group or a low risk group.
Abstract: Devices and methods for determining risk groups for patients according to their propensity to adhere to a medication prescription The "Adherence Estimator™" device of the present invention comprises an incremented scale of potential total scores, a prescription survey having questions directed to assessing a patient1 s beliefs in respect to no more than three domains, the three domains being commitment, concerns and cost, a response recording tool, a scoring matrix and an interpretation tool Embodiments of the invention, which may be implemented in electronic or non-electronic forms, automatically score and interpret responses to the prescription survey questions in order to determine and assign patients to a high risk group, a medium risk group or a low risk group Non-electronic devices of the invention may be constructed from a variety of materials, including without limitation, paper, paper-based products, plastic, wood or metal.
