TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a comprehensive view of the progress and challenges of the inclusion of primary care health systems in Latin American countries, including the challenges of providing the health systems with trained human resources in sufficient numbers, overcoming the fragmentation/segmentation of the systems, ensuring financial sustainability, improving governance, quality of care and information systems, expanding coverage, preparing to face the consequences of an aging population, the changing epidemiological profile, and increase in the response capacity of the public health system.
