Journal ArticleDOI
Mitochondrial alterations of retinal pigment epithelium in age-related macular degeneration
TL;DR: The findings suggest that the severity of mitochondrial and peroxisomal alterations are different between AMD and normal aging, and the timing of damage to RPE may be critical for the development of AMD, and alterations of mitochondrial membranes may play a role in the pathogenesis of AMD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correlation between spectral-domain optical coherence tomography findings and visual outcome after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair.
Magda Gharbiya,Grandinetti F,Vittorio Scavella,Michela Cecere,Mariacristina Esposito,Alessandro Segnalini,Corrado Balacco Gabrieli +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that not only the status of the external limiting membrane and the inner/outer segment junction but also the integrity of the intermediate line and the outer nuclear layer thickness changes may be important predictors of postoperative visual outcome after anatomically successful rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intravitreal bevacizumab treatment for choroidal neovascularization in pathologic myopia: 12-month results.
TL;DR: The results of intravitreal bevacizumab in myopic CNV are very promising with no apparent short-term safety concerns and further studies will be needed to better determine long-term efficacy and safety.
Journal ArticleDOI
Choroidal neovascularization in pathologic myopia: intravitreal ranibizumab versus bevacizumab--a randomized controlled trial.
Magda Gharbiya,Rosalia Giustolisi,Francesca Allievi,Nicoletta Fantozzi,Luigi Mazzeo,Vittorio Scavella,Corrado Balacco Gabrieli +6 more
TL;DR: This randomized clinical study cannot determine a statistically significant difference in anti-VEGF treatment effect between ranibizumab and bevacizumAB for the treatment of CNV secondary to pathologic myopia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retinal pigment epithelium, age-related macular degeneration and neurotrophic keratouveitis.
Enrica Bianchi,Fabio Scarinci,Guido Ripandelli,János Fehér,Elena Pacella,Giuseppe Magliulo,Corrado Balacco Gabrieli,Rocco Plateroti,Pasquale Plateroti,Fiorenzo Mignini,Marco Artico +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, qualitative and quantitative alterations in mitochondria in human retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) from AMD patients and controls were identified and tested the protective effects of pigment epithelial-derived factor (PEDF), a known neurotrophic and antiangiogenic substance, against neurotrophic keratouveitis.
