Recent Advances in Energy Chemistry between Solid-State Electrolyte and Safe Lithium-Metal Anodes

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted enormous attention as one of the critical future technologies for safe and high energy batteries. With the emergence of several highly conductive solid electrolytes in recent years, the bottleneck is no longer Li-ion diffusion within the electrolyte. Instead, many ASSBs are limited by their low Coulombic efficiency, poor power performance, and short cycling life due to the high resistance at the interfaces within ASSBs. Because of the diverse chemical/physical/mechanical properties of various solid components in ASSBs as well as the nature of solid-solid contact, many types of interfaces are present in ASSBs. These include loose physical contact, grain boundaries, and chemical and electrochemical reactions to name a few. All of these contribute to increasing resistance at the interface. Here, we present the distinctive features of the typical interfaces and interphases in ASSBs and summarize the recent work on identifying, probing, understanding, and engineering them. We highlight the complicated, but important, characteristics of interphases, namely the composition, distribution, and electronic and ionic properties of the cathode-electrolyte and electrolyte-anode interfaces; understanding these properties is the key to designing a stable interface. In addition, conformal coatings to prevent side reactions and their selection criteria are reviewed. We emphasize the significant role of the mechanical behavior of the interfaces as well as the mechanical properties of all ASSB components, especially when the soft Li metal anode is used under constant stack pressure. Finally, we provide full-scale (energy, spatial, and temporal) characterization methods to explore, diagnose, and understand the dynamic and buried interfaces and interphases. Thorough and in-depth understanding on the complex interfaces and interphases is essential to make a practical high-energy ASSB.

Interfaces and Interphases in All-Solid-State Batteries with Inorganic Solid Electrolytes.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) using a solid electrolyte show potential for providing improved safety as well as higher energy and power density compared with conventional Li-ion batteries. However, two critical bottlenecks remain: the development of solid electrolytes with ionic conductivities comparable to or higher than those of conventional liquid electrolytes and the creation of stable interfaces between SSB components, including the active material, solid electrolyte and conductive additives. Although the first goal has been achieved in several solid ionic conductors, the high impedance at various solid/solid interfaces remains a challenge. Recently, computational models based on ab initio calculations have successfully predicted the stability of solid electrolytes in various systems. In addition, a large amount of experimental data has been accumulated for different interfaces in SSBs. In this Review, we summarize the experimental findings for various classes of solid electrolytes and relate them to computational predictions, with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the interfacial reactions and insight for the future design and engineering of interfaces in SSBs. We find that, in general, the electrochemical stability and interfacial reaction products can be captured with a small set of chemical and physical principles. The reliable operation of solid-state batteries requires stable or passivating interfaces between solid components. In this Review, we discuss models for interfacial reactions and relate the predictions to experimental findings, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of interface stability.

High photostable epoxy polymerized carbon quantum dots (C-dots) luminescent thin films were prepared and their performances were compared with the CdTe quantum dots (QDs). First, water soluble C-dots (λem = 543.60 nm) were synthesized. Poly (ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEG) and diaminooctane were used as the polymer matrix to make the epoxy resin films. FT-IR spectra showed that there were vibration at 3448 cm −1 and 1644 cm −1 which contributed to -OH and -NH respectively. SEM observations showed that the polymerizations of the films were uniform and there were no structure defects. Mechanical tests showed the tensile modulus of C-dots composite films were 4.6, 4.9, 6.4 and 7.8 MPa respectively with corresponding 0%, 1%, 2% and 5% mass fraction of C-dots, while the tensile modulus of CdTe QDs films were 4.6 MPa under the same mass fraction of CdTe QDs. Compared with semiconductor QDs, the decay of quantum yield were 5% and 10% for the C-dots and CdTe QDs, respectively. The pictures in the continuous irradiation of 48 h showed that the C-dots film was more photostable. This study provides much helpful and profound towards the fluorescent enhancement films in the field of flexible displays.
