Most theories of affective influences on judgement and choice take a valence-based approach, contrasting the effects of positive versus negative feeling states. These approaches have not specified if and when distinct emotions of the same valence have different effects on judgement. In this article, we propose a model of emotion-specific influences on judgement and choice. We posit that each emotion is defined by a tendency to perceive new events and objects in ways that are consistent with the original cognitive-appraisal dimensions of the emotion. To pit the valence and appraisal-tendency approaches against one another, we present a study that addresses whether two emotions of the same valence but differing appraisals—anger and fear—relate in different ways to risk perception. Beyond valence: Toward a model of emotion-specific influences on judgement and choice

Researchers have wondered how the brain creates emotions since the early days of psychological science. With a surge of studies in affective neuroscience in recent decades, scientists are poised to answer this question. In this target article, we present a meta-analytic summary of the neuroimaging literature on human emotion. We compare the locationist approach (i.e., the hypothesis that discrete emotion categories consistently and specifically correspond to distinct brain regions) with the psychological constructionist approach (i.e., the hypothesis that discrete emotion categories are constructed of more general brain networks not specific to those categories) to better understand the brain basis of emotion. We review both locationist and psychological constructionist hypotheses of brain-emotion correspondence and report meta-analytic findings bearing on these hypotheses. Overall, we found little evidence that discrete emotion categories can be consistently and specifically localized to distinct brain regions. Instead, we found evidence that is consistent with a psychological constructionist approach to the mind: A set of interacting brain regions commonly involved in basic psychological operations of both an emotional and non-emotional nature are active during emotion experience and perception across a range of discrete emotion categories.

A consensual, componential model of emotions conceptualises them as experiential, physiological, and behavioural responses to personally meaningful stimuli. The present review examines this model in terms of whether different types of emotion-evocative stimuli are associated with discrete and invariant patterns of responding in each response system, how such responses are structured, and if such responses converge across different response systems. Across response systems, the bulk of the available evidence favours the idea that measures of emotional responding reflect dimensions rather than discrete states. In addition, experiential, physiological, and behavioural response systems are associated with unique sources of variance, which in turn limits the magnitude of convergence across measures. Measures of emotion: A review

What is compassion? And how did it evolve? In this review, we integrate 3 evolutionary arguments that converge on the hypothesis that compassion evolved as a distinct affective experience whose primary function is to facilitate cooperation and protection of the weak and those who suffer. Our empirical review reveals compassion to have distinct appraisal processes attuned to undeserved suffering; distinct signaling behavior related to caregiving patterns of touch, posture, and vocalization; and a phenomenological experience and physiological response that orients the individual to social approach. This response profile of compassion differs from those of distress, sadness, and love, suggesting that compassion is indeed a distinct emotion. We conclude by considering how compassion shapes moral judgment and action, how it varies across different cultures, and how it may engage specific patterns of neural activation, as well as emerging directions of research.

Compassion: An Evolutionary Analysis and Empirical Review

This survey describes recent progress in the field of Affective Computing (AC), with a focus on affect detection. Although many AC researchers have traditionally attempted to remain agnostic to the different emotion theories proposed by psychologists, the affective technologies being developed are rife with theoretical assumptions that impact their effectiveness. Hence, an informed and integrated examination of emotion theories from multiple areas will need to become part of computing practice if truly effective real-world systems are to be achieved. This survey discusses theoretical perspectives that view emotions as expressions, embodiments, outcomes of cognitive appraisal, social constructs, products of neural circuitry, and psychological interpretations of basic feelings. It provides meta-analyses on existing reviews of affect detection systems that focus on traditional affect detection modalities like physiology, face, and voice, and also reviews emerging research on more novel channels such as text, body language, and complex multimodal systems. This survey explicitly explores the multidisciplinary foundation that underlies all AC applications by describing how AC researchers have incorporated psychological theories of emotion and how these theories affect research questions, methods, results, and their interpretations. In this way, models and methods can be compared, and emerging insights from various disciplines can be more expertly integrated.

The assessment and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in individuals with mental retardation has been a neglected area of research. However, current research indicates that these individuals suffer from the same range of psychiatric disorders that is evident in those who are not mentally retarded. A model of assessment and diagnosis of mental illness in this population is presented that incorporates psychiatric as well as behavioral methods. The emphasis is on the comprehensive assessment of an individual's behavior, based on family history, self and informant clinical interviews, rating scales, direct observations, and an experimental analysis of the target behaviors. The model provides the basis for making differential diagnoses in terms of related psychiatric disorders and between psychiatric disorders and behavior problems. Depression and schizophrenia are used as illustrative disorders to describe the application of this model. Given the paucity of literature on the assessment and diagnosis of mental illness in individuals with mental retardation, a number of suggestions are made regarding future research and refinement of the model.

Assessment and Diagnosis of Mental Illness in Persons with Mental Retardation Methods and Measures

We present a brief historical overview of the prevalence studies of psychotropic drugs in individuals with mental retardation that were published between 1966 and 1985, and a more comprehensive review of the prevalence studies from 1986 to 1995. During the 1966 to 1985 period, typical prevalence rates of drug treatments in institutions (children and adults analyzed together) were found to range from 30% to 40% for psychotropic drugs, 25% to 45% for anticonvulsants, and 50% to 70% for psychotropic and/or anticonvulsant drugs (i.e., psychotropics, anticonvulsants, or their combinations). In the community during the same period, prevalence rates in children were typically 2% to 7% for psychotropics, 12% to 31% for anticonsulvants, and 18% to 33% for psychotropic and/or anticonvulsant drugs. Psychopharmacoepidemiology of mental retardation: 1966 to 1995.

Empowerment is a critical indicator of a family's ability to access and effectively utilize services to achieve desired outcomes for themselves and their children. The empowerment status of two groups of families, those with children who had serious emotional disturbance (SED) alone and those with children who had SED combined with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), were investigated. The Family Empowerment Scale (FES) was completed by a sample of 228 families. In addition, these families provided demographic data concerning family composition, race, education, income, membership in a parent support group, and the mental health status of their children. The demographic variables were entered into a multivariate analysis of variance model to predict the empowerment status of families across the four subscales of the FES. Statistically significant correlations were obtained between family empowerment and membership in a parent support group, mental health status of the child (SED alone versus SED with ADHD), gender of the respondent, and respondent education. The results indicated that membership in a parent support group was a strong predictor of family empowerment, panicularly of the systems advocacy and knowledge dimensions of empowerment. Empowerment Status of Families Whose Children Have Serious Emotional Disturbance and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

The Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) was developed to provide clinical information on four hypothesized functions that may control problem behaviour in persons with developmental disabilities. The original four-factor structure of the MAS was based on face validity, with the items being grouped in terms of each of the hypothesized functions. Validation of the scale was provided in terms of correlations between teacher ratings of eight children on the MAS and ranking of the controlling variables from functional analogue tests. In this study, staff in residential facilities rated 60 residents and teachers in schools rated 96 students on the MAS. The target behaviour rated for both samples was self-injury, with the institutional sample engaging in the behaviour more than 15 times an hour and the school sample, less than 15 times an hour. The results of factor analyses, with varimax rotation, provided a conceptually meaningful factor structure with the institutional sample, but not with the school sample. The 16 MAS items resolved into four factors that were conceptually related to four conditions that may maintain problem behaviour (i.e. sensory, escape, attention and tangible). The results suggested that the original MAS has a robust factor structure and may be clinically useful in predicting the controlling functions of problem behaviours, if the target behaviours occur at a rate no less than 15 responses per hour.
