This paper provides an overview on the main additive manufacturing/3D printing technologies suitable for many satellite applications and, in particular, radio-frequency components. In fact, nowadays they have become capable of producing complex net-shaped or nearly net-shaped parts in materials that can be directly used as functional parts, including polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites. These technologies represent the solution for low-volume, high-value, and highly complex parts and products.

Transient radiative and conductive heat transfer in a translucent medium with isotropic optical properties is investigated. The radiative two-flux equation is coupled with the transient energy equation and both equations are solved simultaneously. Transient solutions are obtained for a plane layer with refractive index equal to or larger than one, and with external convection and radiation at each boundary. Illustrative results obtained with the two-flux method show the effects of changing parameters such as optical thicknesses, refractive index, conduction–radiation parameter, and scattering on the transient temperature distribution within the layer. Results are given at different instances during the transient, and the distribution for the largest time is at or very close to steady state. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two‐flux method for transient thermal analysis in a layer of polymer fiber

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to model radiation ovens and to propose a method capable of designing this kind of oven for the paint curing application. Providing a uniform cure condition on the body, especially bodies of complicated geometries, needs accurately‐designed ovens. An algorithm with high speed and high convergence capability is the most serious requirement for designing ovens of this kind.Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the state of the art in dynamic optimisation of radiation paint cure ovens is reviewed and a novel objective function, based on paint cure window, is proposed to be applied for designing radiation ovens. Optimal design of radiation paint cure ovens using a novel objective function

Applying multiple decomposition methods and optimization techniques for achieving optimal cost in mixed materials heat exchanger networks

In this study, effect of desiccant wheel, heat exchanger and cooling coil will be evaluated on decreasing the wet bulb temperature of entering air to cooling tower and decreasing the outlet cold water temperature. For this purpose, change effect of desiccant wheel parameters will be investigated on wet bulb temperature of outlet air from heat exchanger. After that, optimum parameters and minimum wet bulb temperature will be selected. Then, outlet cold water temperature will be achieved for various cooling coil surface temperature with definition of by pass factor and also by using optimum desiccant wheel parameters and entrance air wet bulb temperature to tower related to cooling coil surface temperature. To calculate wet bulb temperature, a mathematical model will be used that shows physical properties of air. After that a nomograph will be used to predict effect of decrease of entrance air wet bulb temperature on reducing the outlet water temperature and it will be done for several cities in Iran. At the end, an equation will be used to calculate required water to air mass flow rate for each outlet cold water temperature. With considering of known circulating water mass flow rate, required air for tower would be calculated and suitable desiccant wheel can be selected.
