The current development of digital image correlation, whose displacement uncertainty is well below the pixel value, enables one to better characterise the behaviour of materials and the response of structures to external loads. A general presentation of the extraction of displacement fields from the knowledge of pictures taken at different instants of an experiment is given. Different strategies can be followed to achieve a sub-pixel uncertainty. From these measurements, new identification procedures are devised making use of full-field measures. A priori or a posteriori routes can be followed. They are illustrated on the analysis of a Brazilian test.

Digital Image Correlation: from Displacement Measurement to Identification of Elastic Properties – a Review

The foundations of two- and three-dimensional image correlation, as well as recent developments, are described in detail. The versatility and robustness of these methods are illustrated through application examples from diverse areas including fracture mechanics, biomechanics, constitutive property measurement in complex materials, model verification for large, flawed structures and nondestructive evaluation. A detailed description of experimental and data-reduction procedures is presented for the application of the two-dimensional image-correlation method to thin-sheet mixed-mode I/II fracture studies, local crack-closure measurements using optical microscopy and the measurement of constitutive properties. Application examples using three-dimensional image correlation include profiling of components for reverse engineering and manufacturing and the measurement of full-field surface deformation during wide cracked panel tensile tests for verification of buckling and crack-growth models. Results from nearly sixteen years of use have demonstrated that both two-dimensional and three-dimensional image-correlation methods are robust and accurate tools for deformation measurements in a variety of applications. The range of uses for the two-and three-dimensional image-correlation methods is growing rapidly as scientists and engineers begin to understand their true capabilities.

Advances in Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Computer Vision

Digital image correlation is an appealing technique for studying crack propagation in brittle materials such as ceramics. A case study is discussed where the crack geometry, and the crack opening displacement are evaluated from image correlation by following two different measurement and identification routes. The displacement uncertainty can reach the nanometer range even though optical pictures are dealt with. The stress intensity factor is estimated with a 7% uncertainty in a complex loading set-up without having to resort to a numerical modelling of the experiment.

Stress intensity factor measurements from digital image correlation: post-processing and integrated approaches

A PC-based, 3-D surface profile and displacement measure- ment system capable of micron-level accuracy using moderately priced off-the-shelf equipment has been developed. For use in field applica- tions, a simplified calibration process using precision grids and camera translations is developed. An improved image correlation process is de- veloped which corrects for perspective distortions due to viewpoint dif- ferences between the two cameras. The accuracy of the system was assessed experimentally and results expressed using several different error measures, including a new error measure proposed by the authors. The accuracy for both the profile and displacement measurement sys- tems was established through a series of profile and translation tests. The baseline tests confirmed that the measurement system is capable of highly accurate full-field measurements. The system was also used suc- cessfully to measure both the bending of a clamped circular plate under pressure loading and the local buckling which occurs during tension loading of a cracked plate. © 1996 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumen- tation Engineers. Improved three-dimensional image correlation for surface displacement measurement

The stable tearing behavior of 2.3-mm thick sheets of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy was experimentally investigated for middle crack tension specimens having initial flaws that were: (a) flat fatigue cracks (low fatigue stress) and (b) 45-deg through-thickness slant cracks (high fatigue stress). The critical CTOA values during stable tearing were measured by two independent methods, optical microscopy and digital-image correlation. Results from the two methods agree well. The CTOA measurements and observations of the fracture surfaces have shown that the initial stable tearing behavior of low and high fatigue stress tests is significantly different. The cracks in the low fatigue stress tests underwent a transition from flat-to-slant crack growth, during which the CTOA values were high and significant crack tunneling occurred. After crack growth equal to about the thickness (Δa>B), CTOA reached a constant value of 6 deg and after crack growth equal to about twice the thickness (Δa>2B), crack tunneling stabilized. The cracks in the high fatigue stress tests reach the same constant CTOA value after crack growth equal to about the thickness, but produced only slightly higher CTOA values during initial crack growth. The amount of tunneling in the high fatigue stress tests was about the same as that in the low fatigue stress tests after the flat-to-slant transition. This study indicates that stress history has an influence on the initial portion of the stable tearing behavior. The initial high CTOA values, in the low fatigue crack tests, coincided with large three-dimensional crack front shape changes due to a variation in the through-thickness crack-tip constraint. The measured CTOA reached a constant value of 6 deg for crack growth of about the specimen thickness. This coincided with the onset of 45-deg slant crack growth and a stabilized, slightly tunneled (about 20 percent of the thickness) crack-front shape. For crack growth on the 45-deg slant, the crack front and local field variables are still highly three dimensional.
