The apparent dissociation constants of carbonic acid in seawater were determined as functions of temperature (2-35°C) and salinity ( 19-43%) at atmospheric pressure by measurement of K’1 and the product K’, K’,. At 35sa salinity and 25°C the measured values were pE1 = 6.600 and pK’2 = 9.115; at 35% and 2°C the measured values were pK’1 = 6.177 and pKPz = 9.431.

The collection of extensive, reliable, oceanic carbon data is a key component of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). A portion of the US JGOFS oceanic carbon dioxide measurements will be made during the World Ocean Circulation Experiment Hydrographic Program. A science team has been formed to plan and coordinate the various activities needed to produce high quality oceanic carbon dioxide measurements under this program. This handbook was prepared at the request of, and with the active participation of, that science team. The procedures have been agreed on by the members of the science team and describe well tested methods. They are intended to provide standard operating procedures, together with an appropriate quality control plan, for measurements made as part of this survey. These are not the only measurement techniques in use for the parameters of the oceanic carbon system; however, they do represent the current state-of-the-art for ship-board measurements. In the end, the editors hope that this handbook can serve widely as a clear and unambiguous guide to other investigators who are setting up to analyze the various parameters of the carbon dioxide system in sea water.

When adult females of Calanus pacificus are fed on monospecific cultures of centric diatoms which grow as single cells, a predictive relationship is found between feeding behavior of the copepods and size and concentration of food particles. Ingestion rate of copepods increases linearly with cell concentration up to a maximal rate. This maximal ingestion rate, expressed as carbon, is the same for copepods feeding on diatoms ranging in diameter from 11-87 P. As the size of food particles increases, the carbon concentration at which this ingestion rate is achieved decreases. Preparation of artificial seawater1

A method was developed for determining the apparent dissociation constants of a tribasic acid in complex concentrated ionic solutions using potentiometric pH measurements and acid-base titrations. The apparent dissociation constants of phosphoric acid were determined in artificial seawater over the ranges of temperature and salinity normally encountered in the ocean. These apparent dissociation constants were also measured in 0.68 m NaCl, which has the same ionic strength as seawater of 33‰ salinity. It was estimated that 99.6% of the PO43− species and 44% of the HPO42− species are complexed by cations in seawater other than Na+. The values of the apparent dissociation constants reveal that in seawater of 33‰ salinity at 20C at pH 8.0, 87% of the inorganic phosphate exists as HPO42−, 12% as PO43−, and 1% as H2PO4− .
