Integrative approaches are particularly useful to resolve taxonomic uncertainties in species-rich groups that have undergone explosive radiation, such as Hypostomini (suckermouth armored catfishes). This tribe encompasses the genera Hypostomus and Pterygoplichthys, but the actual number of species in each genus and the intergeneric interrelationships are confusing or unknown for some ecoregions in the Neotropics. Here, we analyzed three endemic species Hypostomus chrysostiktos, H. jaguar and H. unae from Northeastern Mata Atlântica in northeastern Brazil based on meristic characters, geometric morphometrics, chromosomal data, DNA barcode and species delimitation algorithms. The current taxonomic status of these catfishes is challenged. While H. unae and H. jaguar revealed a close evolutionary relationship similar to those observed within Hypostomus from other basins, H. chrysostiktos was herein more closely related to Pterygoplichthys, being invariably recovered as a highly distinctive taxonomic unit than to Hypostomus. Therefore, we recommend the reallocation of H. chrysostiktos as Pterygoplichthys chrysostiktos and a thorough systematic review of Pterygoplichthys, particularly focusing on putative convergence traits in relation to Hypostomus.

Predation is one of the main barriers that exotic species may face in newly colonized areas and may help stop or control the potential negative impacts of invasive species in the environment. We evaluated if the consumption of an invasive prey (armored catfish: Pterygoplichtys sp.) affects the dietary niche breadth and trophic level of a native predator (Neotropical river otter: Lontra longicaudis) in northern Guatemala. We examined otter scats from three rivers: two where the invasive armored catfish occurred and one without the invasive fish. Samples were collected two and seven years after the first report of the catfish in the area. We performed gross scat analysis and stable isotope analyses of nitrogen and carbon of fecal matter. Where the invasive armored catfish occurred, it was the main prey item for L. longicaudis. Particularly in the river outside of protected areas seven years after the first report of the catfish, where it accounted for 49% of the otter diet. Concordance was found between the two techniques to estimate dietary niche breadth and trophic level. The dietary niche breath of otters was narrower seven years after the invasion in comparison to two years after the invasion in both invaded rivers, but the extent of the reduction was lesser inside the protected area. Finally, the trophic level of otters also showed a reduction related to the occurrence of the armored catfish in their diet.

Variation in Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis) diet: Effects of an invasive prey species.

Alexander Benjamin Orfinger and Daniel Douglas Goodding (2018) The suckermouth armored catfish genus Pterygoplichthys (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) includes popular aquarium fishes and constitutes one of the most successful freshwater invasive taxa, having achieved global distribution. To date, however, no comprehensive distributional record nor impact assessment exist for the spread of the genus, precluding informed management strategies. To provide these tools, our study aims to (1) provide an annotated checklist of species for this taxonomically confusing genus, (2) survey all available literature on the spread of the genus and summarize and map its invasive distribution, and (3) assess the overall socioeconomic and environmental impact of the genus on a global scale using the Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS). First, we provide an updated annotated species list. We then summarize seventy-one unique invasion records along with twenty-one instances of demonstrated impacts. Species of the genus Pterygoplichthys have now invaded five continents and twenty-one countries, and show an extended range in their native South America. Impact analysis yielded a GISS score of 18 to 19, indicating low to moderate levels of socioeconomic and environmental threats. However, to bolster the confidence in this analysis in future iterations, more research should aim to move beyond just "first records" and instead empirically evaluate species' effects on native ecosystems.
