Several series of experiments have been conducted to gain information about the wettability of AlN, BN, Si3N4 and two sialon ceramics by potential braze materials. It was possible to achieve wetting of all five ceramics using aluminium, copper-titanium alloys, and a Ag-28Cu-2Ti alloy. Wetting by aluminium and the Ag-28Cu-2Ti alloy was usually good. Both wetting and non-wetting alloys containing titanium reacted to form TiN and it is argued that the achievement of wettability is associated with a certain degree of hypostoichiometry. While aluminium should also have reacted, no clear evidence was obtained. In supplementary experiments it was found that bonds formed by brazing with aluminium at 1000 °C could have shear strengths as great as 60MPa. Although the experimental work was preliminary in nature, it suggested that good brazing systems could be developed.

Some observations on the wetting and bonding of nitride ceramics

Thermodynamic and phase diagram data in the Fe-Cu system are evaluated. For the liquid and fcc phases, the Margules-type of equations is used. For the bcc phase, the same type of equation is used to describe the non-magnetic contribution to the Gibbs energy. In addition, a magnetic term is included. Using the thermodynamic equations derived from equilibrium data, the stable and metastable equilibria of this system are calculated. Agreement between the calculated and experimental phase diagram is good except for temperatures higher than 1720 K. For these temperatures, the calculated liquidus tends to be higher. The possibility of supercooling which may account for some of the lower temperatures measured should not be excluded. The calculated metastable miscibility gap of the liquid phase also agrees with the experimental data.

Thermodynamic analysis of the iron-copper system I: The stable and metastable phase equilibria

The need for new, improved solder alloys and a better understanding of reactions during the soldering process grows steadily as the need for smaller and more reliable electronic products increases. Information obtained from phase equilibria data and thermodynamic calculations has proven to be an important tool in the design and understanding of new lead-free solder alloys. A wide range of candidate alloys can be rapidly evaluated for proper freezing ranges, susceptibility to contamination effects, and reactions with substrate materials before the expensive process of preparing and testing candidate alloys is initiated.

Phase diagrams for lead-free solder alloys

Isothermal sections of the Al-Cu-Fe equilibrium phase diagram at temperatures from 680 °C to 800 °C were determined in the region with 50 to 75 at. pct Al and 0 to 25 at. pct Fe using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) techniques. This re- gion includes the face-centered icosahedral phase (Ψ-Al6Cu2Fe) which has unprecedented struc- tural perfection and no apparent phason strain. The icosahedral phase has equilibrium phase fields with four distinct phases at 700 °C and 720 °C (β-Al(Fe, Cu), λ-Al13Fe4, ω-Al7Cu2Fe, and liquid) and three phases at 680 °C(β, ω, and λ) and 800 °C (β, λ, and liquid). The B2 ordered β phase has considerably greater solubility for Cu than previously reported, extending from AlFe to ∼Al50Fe5Cu45. The equilibrium range of composition for the icosahedral phase at these temperatures was determined, and a liquidus projection is proposed.

Thermodynamic modeling of the Nb–Hf–Si ternary system

Phase diagram and thermodynamic data for twenty ternary copper‐silver‐X alloy systems—where X represents Al,Au,Cd,Fe,Ge,In,Mg,Mn,Ni,P,Pb,Pd,Re,S,Sb,Se,Sn,Te,Ti or Zn—were compiled and critically evaluated. Of the twenty ternary systems, thermodynamic data are available for only the seven systems containing Au,Pb,Pd,S,Sn,Te and Zn. The high‐temperature phase relationships in the iron‐rich region of the Cu‐Fe binary system were also evaluated and a recommended phase diagram is presented.
