This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Review of passive PCM latent heat thermal energy storage systems towards buildings’ energy efficiency

This paper reviews the development of clean vehicles, including pure electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and high energy power batteries, such as nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), lithium-ion (Li-ion) and proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The mathematical models and thermal behavior of the batteries are described. Details of various thermal management techniques, especially the PCMs battery thermal management system and the materials thermal conductivity, are discussed and compared. It is concluded that the EVs, HEVs and FCEVs are effective to reduce GHG and pollutants emission and save energy. At stressful and abuse conditions, especially at high discharge rates and at high operating or ambient temperatures, traditional battery thermal energy management systems, such as air and liquid, may be not meeting the requirements. Pulsating heat pipe may be more effective but needs to be well designed. In addition, progress in developing new high temperature material is very difficult. PCM for battery thermal management is a better selection than others. Nevertheless, thermal conductivity of the PCMs such as paraffin is low and some methods are adopted to enhance the heat transfer of the PCMs. The performance and thermo-mechanical behaviors of the improved PCMs in the battery thermal management system need to be investigated experimentally. And the possibility of the heat collection and recycling needs to be discussed in terms of energy saving and efficient.

 This paper presents a skewed upwinding procedure for application to the Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) in the context of radiation heat transfer problems involving participating media. The proposed first order scheme is stable, economical, accurate and it inherently precludes the possibility of computing negative coefficients in the discretized algebraic equations while accounting for the direction of radiant propagation. The suggested first-order skew positive coefficients upwind scheme (SPCUS) is validated by application to several basic test problems, acknowledged by the radiative heat transfer community: its performance has proven to be excellent.

Analyse thermo-économique d’une installation géothermique pour le secteur résidentiel selon l’implantation géographique

Résumé : Cette étude est réalisée afin de caractériser la performance relative de systèmes photovoltaïques (PV) résidentiels installés au Canada et au Maroc. À cette fin, deux systèmes semblables ont été simulés, l’un à Montréal et l'autre à Casablanca. Les simulations ont été réalisées par PVSOL Pro pour les jours, les périodes mensuelles et annuelles. Les orientations optimales ont été déterminées. L’analyse sur une base annuelle montre que l'efficacité globale est respectivement de 12,2 % et 11,7 % pour les systèmes situés à Montréal et à Casablanca. La réflexion sur la neige et l'effet des températures ambiantes moins élevées améliorent les performances du système situé à Montréal. Enfin, l’utilisation de suiveurs solaire est discutée.

Comparaison d’un système photovoltaïque résidentiel au Québec et au Maroc

La gestion de la qualité de l’air demeure un des problèmes importants à traiter dans les milieux agro-alimentaires confinés tels les serres, les poulaillers ou les porcheries. D’une part, des taux élevés d’humidité favorisent l’apparition de moisissures ou d’autres formes bactériennes dans les bâtiments et provoquent une réduction dans la transpiration des plantes, donc une baisse de rendement [1] dans les serres. D’autre part, un taux élevé d’ammoniac ou autre contaminant dans l’air compromet la croissance des portées de poulets à griller ou des porcs avant qu’ils atteignent la maturité. Il faut donc ventiler quelles que soient les conditions climatiques. Une équipe composée de la Chaire de recherche en technologies de l’énergie et en efficacité énergétique (t3e) de l’École de technologie supérieure et de Énergie Solutions et Associés a mis au point, avec le soutien de Gaz Métro, un échangeur thermique multitube en plastique destiné à la gestion de la qualité de l’air en serres et en poulaillers. Malgré une importante résistance thermique des parois par rapport à des échangeurs en métal, la grande surface d’échange et la condensation de l’air évacué sur les tuyaux froids confèrent une performance prometteuse. Le prototype s’avère à la fois performant et économique avec une efficacité moyenne d’environ 80% et une période de retour sur l’investissement de moins de 3 ans. La chaleur latente peut contribuer jusqu’à 40% du transfert thermique total.

Caractérisation de la performance d'un échangeur destiné au secteur agro-alimentaire

In hot climate, passive cooling techniques will often be unable to provide all the cooling needs. In such situation, active cooling is needed to keep the temperature within the comfort zone. Nevertheless, this additional cooling can also comes from renewable energy sources. For this purpose, solar air conditioning represents a technical solution keeping the environmental impacts at minimum. A significant advantage of this technology it is the fact that summer peak cooling period is conveniently associated with a high level of solar radiation. Development of this technology has been carried over the last 30 years with most work done in the last 10 years. It is now mature enough to show a strong potential for significant primary energy savings. In particular, for southern European and Mediterranean areas, solar assisted cooling systems can bring energy savings in the range of 40 to 50%. For more northern countries, where cooling loads are much lower, this technique can be coupled with more traditional solar applications like water and space heating. In this communication, we will review the state-of-the-art and potential of solar-assisted cooling and air conditioning technologies.
