Abstract: The problem of comparing academic institutions in terms of their research production is nowadays a priority issue. This paper proposes a relative bidimensional index that takes into account both the net production and the quality of it, as an attempt to provide a comprehensive and objective way to compare the research output of different institutions in a specific field, using journal contributions and citations. The proposed index is then applied, as a case study, to rank the top Spanish universities in the fields of Chemistry and Computer Science in the period ranging from 2000 until 2009. A comparison with the top 50 universities in the ARWU rankings is also made, showing the proposed ranking is better suited to distinguish among non-elite universities.

Abstract: Se describen los “Rankings ISI de las universidades espanolas segun campos del conocimiento” y se presentan algunos de sus resultados. Una de las caracteristicas esenciales de estos nuevos rankings, basados en los productos de T homson- Reuters , es la organizacion en 12 campos del conocimiento diferentes. Como criterio de ordenacion de las universidades se ha empleado el IFQ2A-Index que sintetiza informacion de 6 indicadores bibliometricos distintos. En los resultados generales derivados del ranking se presentan indicadores globales del sistema universitario espanol que muestran un crecimiento sostenido de su produccion cientifica pero un estancamiento en el incremento de la visibilidad de las revistas. Asimismo el analisis especifico de los resultados del ranking manifiesta el dominio de las universidades catalanas en los doce campos del conocimiento analizados durante el quinquenio 2005-2009.

Abstract: This paper presents a bibliometric study analyzing the productivity and citations of female researchers in the fields of social sciences and law in Spain, within the context of Spanish scientific journals. The study was based on the rankings of researchers included in the Indice de Impacto de las Revistas Espanolas de Ciencias Sociales (INRECS) and Indice de Impacto de las Revistas Espanolas de Ciencias Juridicas (INRECJ). Eleven different scientific disciplines were analyzed and the final sample consisted of 3,370 researchers, of whom 30 % were women. To study gender differences four variables were selected and analyzed: number of papers, number of citations, number of international citations and citation average. The results show that women in the 11 areas studied have both a lower productivity and a lower number of citations. On the other hand, in some areas women do receive a greater number of international citations and in almost all areas achieve higher citation averages. However the presence of women in the rankings and among the Spanish research elite is still small.

Abstract: The update of the ISI rankings of Spanish universities according to fields and scientific disciplines (2nd ed. 2011) is presented. Specifically, in this second edition we focus on the inclusion of 19 new scientific disciplines and the creation of a dynamic new website. Various bibliometric analyses of the different rankings are also shown. Firstly, the updated data for the rankings on 12 scientific fields for the 2006-2010 period are presented focusing on the changes in the positions compared to the 2005-2009 period. Secondly, we present the results in the scientific disciplines during the 2006-2010 period, on the one hand for the Spanish university system as a whole, and on the other hand showing the major universities in 19 new disciplines. Finally we conclude that the 2nd edition of the ISI Rankings improves the global analysis of strengths and weaknesses in the Spanish higher education system and more precisely profiles the performance of Spanish universities in more specific areas.

Abstract: The new bibliometric product announced by Thomson Reuters, Book citation index, is described. The authors discuss how this powerful company can carry out this big project (big science) and also improve its other products, taking advantage of the many studies undertaken by small bibliometric research teams (little science) in previous years. The new index promises to be successful because books are the main communication vehicle in the humanities.
