Mobile learning management systems are very important for training purpose. But considering the present scenario, the learners are equipped with a number of mobile devices that run by different operating systems with diverse device features. Therefore, developing a mobile application for different platforms is a cumbersome task if appropriate tools and techniques are not practiced. There are three categories of mobile application namely native, web based and hybrid. For mobile learning system, hybrid is an appropriate choice. In order to avoid re-implementation of the same hybrid application for different platform separately, several tools are proposed for example: PhoneGap, Adobe Air, Sencha Touch and QT, each with their own strength. With proper use of the strength of individual framework or the combination of frameworks, more compatible and more stable, cross-platform mobile learning application specifically for quizzes and assignments can be developed.

Higher education institutes are increasingly turning their attention to web-based learning management systems. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether data collected from LMS can be used to predict student performance in classrooms that use LMS to supplement face-to-face teaching. Data was collected from eight courses spread across two semesters at a private university in Lebanon. Event history analysis was used to investigate whether the probability of logging in was related to the gender and grade of the students. Results indicate that students with higher grades login more frequently to the LMS, that females login more frequently than males, and that student login activity increases as the semester progresses. As a result, this study shows that login activity can be used to predict the academic performance of students. These findings suggest that educators in traditional face-to-face classes can benefit from educational data mining techniques that are applied to the data collected by learning management systems in order to monitor student performance.

Using Learning Management System Activity Data to Predict Student Performance in Face-to-Face Courses

The use of the Learning Management Systems (LMS) has been increased. It is desirable to access multiple learning objects that are managed by Learning Management Systems. The diversity of LMS allow us to consider them as heterogeneous systems; each ones with their own interface to manage the provided functionality. These interfaces can be Web services or calls to remote objects. The functionalities offered by LMS depend on their user roles. A solution to integrate diverse heterogeneous platforms is based on a middleware architecture. In this paper, a middleware architecture is presented to integrate different Learning Management Systems. Furthermore, an implementation of the proposed middleware is presented. This implementation integrates two different Learning Management Systems, using Web services and XML-RPC protocols to access student-role users capabilities. The result is a transparent layer that provides access to LMS contents.

Middleware to integrate heterogeneous Learning Management Systems and initial results

With the rapid growth of mobile technologies, the evolution of mobile devices, and the progress in wireless communications and networking technologies, mobile devices have become very popular and have reached a very high spread. Consequently, mobile learning (m-learning) has become a prominent phenomenon and has revolutionized the entire education system. This paper aims to highlight the significant importance of mobile devices in the field of e-learning in higher education. To do so, we have conducted a study on a massive open online course (MOOC) created and implemented specifically to respond and blend into overcrowded classrooms and Amphitheaters. The obtained results showed that the integration and the use of m-learning facilitated the learners’ access to the teaching resources and materials offered by the University, and its promoted academic learning in classrooms and amphitheaters, in order to enhance the learning outcomes of the learners. 

The Use of Mobile Learning in Higher Education: A Study on the MOOC of Cadi Ayyad University

Learning Management Systems (LMS) have acquired importance in schools and business training. The increase in the use of mobile devices has led to many users attempting to access LMS from devices for which these systems and their contents were not designed. Also, mobile devices contain various features in their interaction media and there are no standards for these. This variety of features changes from the type of display, keyboard and sensors, to operating systems. A natural task to mobile device users would be to access any LMS in a simple, effective and efficient way from any mobile device. Besides that developers won't have to write native applications for each mobile platform and each version. An appropriate solution to these problems is to apply a middleware-based architecture. This paper presents an analysis of the functionality of LMS focused on student role users using different mobile devices.
