A method is disclosed for use in a software development framework having a repository and at least two software systems. The repository contains a meta-model and the software systems, which store instances of the meta-model. The method enables exchange of the instances of the metadata among the software systems using a generalized data transfer language. The method comprises the steps of extracting a fixed component and a list of repeated components of the metadata; extracting a variable component form the list of repeated components; parsing the variable component into a first set of constituent components for a first instance of the variable component; and, determining the hierarchical order and inheritance of the first set of constituent components in the list of repeated components. Next, each of the first set of constituent components are transformed into corresponding components of the generalized software language. The first instance of the variable component is then transformed into corresponding components of the generalized software language. The list of repeated components is updated and the previous five steps are repeated for another instance of the variable component. The list of repeated components are next transformed into corresponding components of the generalized software language. After this, the fixed components are transformed into corresponding components of the generalized software language. Finally, the corresponding components are distributed to the second instance of the software model.

Method and system for generating a hierarchial document type definition for data interchange among software tools

A system and method to allow scalability of file storage in terms of capacity and performance through a symmetric multicomputer architecture with shared storage, in which storage and protocol processing resources can be added to (or removed from) the system without any need of recognizing and/or explicitly migrating the data stored in the system. The invention permits accessing files stored (i.e., written) in any of multiple external protocol processing nodes to be retrieved from any other external protocol processing node.

Symmetric shared file storage system

Disclosed is a system for mapping objects defined in a design model, such as an object oriented design model defined using a design language such as the Universal Modeling Language (UML), to a data model accessible to an application development tool. A design model is provided that includes at least two models. A first model includes a first class and a second model includes a second class. The first class and second class have the same name, and the first class and second class have at least one different attribute and method. The first model, the first class, and attributes and methods therein are mapped to a first data structure that indicates that the first class is included with the first model. The second model, the second class, and attributes and methods therein are mapped to a second data structure that indicates that the second class is included with the second model. In this way, the first class and the second class are distinguished according to their model in the data structures.

System and method for mapping a design model to a common repository with context preservation

According to one embodiment, a metadata management system (MDS) may include partitioned migratable metadata. Metadata may be stored in multiple metadata partitions (102-0 to 102-11). Each metadata partition may be assigned to a particular system resource (104-0 to 104-5). According to predetermined policies, such as metadata aging, metadata stored in one metadata partition may be migrated to a different metadata partition. A forwarding object can be placed in the old metadata partition to indicate the new location of the migrated metadata. Metadata partitions (102-0 to 102-11) may be reassigned to different resources, split and/or merged allowing a high degree of scalability, as well as flexibility in meeting storage system needs.

Storage system having partitioned migratable metadata

A method is disclosed for effecting data interchange among software tools and repositories in a distributed heterogeneous environment in a computer system having at least one repository of a first type and at least one software modeling tool of a second type. The method includes the steps of registering and storing metadata describing a meta model in the repository. Next, a set of rules and streams of data are generated based on the rules, and then documents conforming to each of the metamodels are generated by reading the set of rules. An importer is written for use in importing into the repository the streams of data; and, an exporter is written for use in exporting from the repository the streams of data.

Metadata driven system for effecting extensible data interchange based on universal modeling language (UML), meta object facility (MOF) and extensible markup language (XML) standards

A method and system for creating a distributed object interface description and a distributed object server interface module to a software system, such as a repository. In a preferred embodiment, a repository contains an object oriented information model from which an interface description and a server implementation interface module can be generated. A metadata interface allows a generator program to obtain detailed information about the information model. The generator program uses the metadata to create the interface description for the model. The generator program also generates implementation classes that will serve as the interface module between the distributed object interface and the repository.
