Application of the Fe3O4-chitosan nano-adsorbent for the adsorption of metronidazole from wastewater: Optimization, kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies.

This work focused on the use of low-cost magnetic biochar adsorbent prepared from Litchi chinensis peel for the Cr(VI) amelioration through the reduction-adsorption process. This magnetic biochar was prepared by the pyrolysis process, where the nano zerovalent iron (nZVIO) was decorated on the surface of Litchi peel biochar (LPBC). The XRD and TEM studies indicated that the nano-scale zerovalent iron nanoparticles were crystalline having a particle size of 5 ± 0.1 nm. The BET analysis showed the mesoporous nature of the material with good surface area (124 m 2 /g) and also material has a magnetic saturation value of 0.176 emu/g, where as surface area of LPBC were 325 m 2 /g and Ms valie 1.1 emu/g respectively. Three factorial Box–Behnken experimental design was simulated for Cr(VI) removal by taking key parameters initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and initial pH as independent factors. The optimum values obtained from desirability function and given by the model were initial Cr(VI) concentration of 5.87 mg/L, 3.14 for pH, and 0.195 g/L for adsorbent dose, which resulted in approximately 95.38% removal of Cr(VI) in these optimum conditions. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics data were explained in the adsorption studies. The adsorbent has an adsorption capacity of 98.36 mg/g at the obtained optimized conditions. The thermodynamics study specified a spontaneous process for Cr(VI) removal. The adsorption mechanism was detailed by XPS analysis which indicated a reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) then adsorption of Cr(III) on the adsorbent surface. • A new nZVIO/LPBC biochar is synthesized in the reflux process. • BBD optimization study is conducted for Cr(VI) removal. • Adsorbent first reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and then adsorb Cr(III) on its surface. • The adsorption capacity of nZVIO/LPBC biochar for Cr(VI) is 98.36 mg/g. 

Mechanism enhanced active biochar support magnetic nano zero-valent iron for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from simulated polluted water

Chia oil is susceptible to oxidation and to make this oil application into foodstuffs possible, chia-oil based microparticles were produced. Oil-in-water emulsions were produced by ultrasound and their stability was maximized using a central composite rotational design (X1: pea protein X2: oil concentration). Hi-Cap® 100 (HC) or maltodextrin (MD) were used as carrier agents in spray drying. The validated formulation with 13.50% (w/w) oil and 3.87% (w/w) pea protein presented the best stability conditions (no phase separation for 7 days, monomodal size distribution, and 1.59 μm of moda diameter). Particles showed high encapsulation efficiency (87.71 and 91.97% for MD and HC, respectively) and low water activity and moisture values (0.114–0.150% and 2.64–3.41%, respectively). HC particles exhibited better physicochemical and structural characteristics, apart from their good reconstitution, which shows the potential of this approach as a viable alternative for the use of rich-plant ingredients, such as chia oil and pea protein.

The increasing demand of non-toxic and environmentally friendly dyes, colorants that come from natural source have risen as an alternative of sintetic poisonous dyes. In this research natural dye from S. mahagony was extracted using microwave-assisted extraction method under different operating condition such as extraction time (10-30min), plant material to solvent ratio (0.03-0.05g/mL) and microwave power level (100-380 watt). Box-Behnken method and central composite design (CCD) method is widely used for modeling response surface methodology (RSM), both methods show good prediction performance. In this study response surface methodology was performed to optimize the process, both methods were performed by the help Statgraphics Centurion 16 to evaluate the effects of different operating parameters. Finally, both methods were statistically compared by root mean square error (RMSE) and absolute average deviation (AAD) based on validation data set. Further, result suggests that CCD has better performance as compared to Box-Behnken method. The maximum yield obtained for Box-Behnken is 3.7647% (380 watt, 0.0339g/mL, 28.8899min) and 3.7506% (379.986 watt, 0.0378g/mL, 30min) for central composite design method.
