Journal ArticleDOI
One for all and all for one: Linear regression from the mass of individual bones to assess human skeletal mass completeness.
David Gonçalves,João d’Oliveira Coelho,Maria A. Acosta,Catarina Coelho,Francisco Curate,Francisco Curate,Maria Teresa Ferreira,Márcia Gouveia,Calil Makhoul,Débora Pinto,Inês Oliveira-Santos,A. R. Vassalo,David Navega,Eugénia Cunha +13 more
TL;DR: The femur, humerus, and second metacarpal were the best predictors of total skeletal mass with root mean squared errors ranging from 292.9 to 346.1 g as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sample-specific odontometric sex estimation: A method with potential application to burned remains.
TL;DR: The potential of odontometry for sex estimation was investigated and the perimeter at the cementum-enamel junction and the combined measurements of the mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters were quite promising in the post-burning analysis with correct sex classifications above 80%.
The Roman cremation burials of Encosta de Sant’Ana (Lisbon)
David Gonçalves,Cidália Duarte,Cláudia Costa,João Muralha,Vanessa Campanacho,Ana Maria Costa,Diego E. Angelucci +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a bioarchaeological approach was adopted in order to infer the funerary behaviour of the inhabitants of Olisipo, Roman Lisbon, through their burned skeletal remains.
Looking back at a decade of science communication in the field of human evolution
Sandra Assis,Vanessa Campanacho,Vânia Carvalho,Cristina Cruz,Francisco Curate,David Gonçalves,Richard Marques,Vítor Matos,Telmo Pereira,Susana Carvalho +9 more
TL;DR: An overview of the main activities developed by GEEvH in the last decade as well as upcoming goals, is provided in this paper, with a short theoretical introduction to Charles Darwin's Assis et al. theories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preliminary results of an investigation on postmortem variations in human skeletal mass of buried bones.
Ana Amarante,Maria Teresa Ferreira,Calil Makhoul,A. R. Vassalo,Eugénia Cunha,David Gonçalves +5 more
TL;DR: This paper investigates the effect of inhumation, weather and heat exposure on the skeletal mass of two different bone types and suggests that mass comparisons against published references should be performed only after the skeletal remains have been preemptively dried from exogenous water.
