The present invention describes a system and method for communicating voice and data over a packet-switched network that is adapted to coexist and communicate with a legacy PSTN. The system permits packet switching of voice calls and data calls through a data network from and to any of a LEC, a customer facility or a direct IP connection on the data network. The system includes soft switch sites, gateway sites, a data network, a provisioning component, a network event component and a network management component. The system interfaces with customer facilities (e.g., a PBX), carrier facilities (e.g., a LEC) and legacy signaling networks (e.g., SS7) to handle calls between any combination of on-network and off-network callers. The soft switch sites provide the core call processing for the voice network architecture. The soft switch sites manage the gateway sites in a preferred embodiment, using a protocol such as the Internet Protocol Device Control (IPDC) protocol to request the set-up and tear-down of calls. The gateway sites originate and terminate calls between calling parties and called parties through the data network. The gateway sites include network access devices to provide access to network resources. The data network connects one or more of the soft switch sites to one or more of the gateway sites. The provisioning and network event component collects call events recorded at the soft switch sites. The network management component includes a network operations center (NOC) for centralized network management.

Voice over data telecommunications network architecture

A system and method of pushing user-selected data items from a host system to a user's mobile data communication device upon detecting the occurrence of one or more user-defined event triggers is provided. The user may then move (or file) the data items to a particular folder within a folder hierarchy stored in the mobile data communication device, or may execute some other system operation on the data item. Software operating at the mobile device and the host system then synchronizes the folder hierarchy of the mobile device with a folder hierarchy of the host system, and any actions executed on the data items at the mobile device are then automatically replicated on the same data items stored at the host system, thus eliminating the need for the user to manually replicate actions at the host system that have been executed at the mobile data communication device.

System and Method for Pushing Information from a Host System to a Mobile Data Communication Device

When a network resource request having a domain name is received, it is determined whether the network resource can be located including determining whether the domain name is resolvable. Rather than, or in addition to, displaying an error message or processing a search request in response to determining that a network resource can not be located or of an unresolvable domain name, the domain name can instead be redirected to a registration service where the domain name may automatically be used to perform a registration request and determine domain name availability. When the domain name is not available for registration, domain name registrant information is provided. However, when the domain name is determined available, a registration form is provided. For example, such a domain name in question may be redirected from the autosearch feature of a web browser to a service, which determines that the domain name is available for registration enabling a potential registrant to register the available domain name by selecting a domain name registration provider from a list of domain name registration providers.

Method, product, and apparatus for requesting a network resource

A scheme for redirecting e-mail messages and message attachments from a mail system to a mobile data communication device. In one embodiment, a method comprises one or more of the following: automatically detecting a data item including an e-mail message and a message attachment by a redirector component associated with the mail system; processing the data item for sending a first portion of the data item to the mobile data communication device via a wireless network; receiving a command message from the mobile data communication device at the redirector component requesting more of the data item; and sending a second portion of the data item including the message attachment to the mobile data communication device via the wireless network in response to the command message.

System and method for redirecting message attachments between a host system and a mobile data communication device

A system enables communication between server resources and a wide spectrum of end-terminals to enable access to the resources of both converged and non-converged networks via voice and/or electronically generated commands. An electronic personal assistant (ePA) incorporates generalizing/abstracting communications channels, data and resources provided through a converged computer/telephony system interface such that the data and resources are readily accessed by a variety of interface formats including a voice interface or data interface. A set of applications provides dual interfaces for rendering services and data based upon the manner in which a user accesses the data. An electronic personal assistant in accordance with an embodiment of the invention provides voice/data access to web pages, email, file shares, etc. A voice-based resource server authenticates a user by receiving vocal responses to one or more requests variably selected and issued by a speaker recognition-based authentication facility. Thereafter an application proxy is created.

A routing switch (1) includes an input (4a) for receiving serial packets from a source node in a computer network, a plurality of outputs (6a...6n), switch circuitry (10) for selectively interconnecting said input to a selected one of said outputs and header reading circuitry (22) for reading the header portion of a packet received at the input prior to receiving all of the packet. The switch also has a random header generator (28) which produces header portions generated at random which are then read by the header reading circuitry. The header reading circuitry is coupled to the switch circuitry (10) to connect to said input one of said outputs in dependence on said random header. The random header portion is then discarded at the routing switch identified thereby to reveal the original header. There is also provided a computer network, having a plurality of computer devices and at least one routing switch, and a method of routing messages through such a network.

A method of operating a cache memory is described in a system in which a processor is capable of executing a plurality of processes, each process including a sequence of instructions. In the method a cache memory is divided into cache partitions, each cache partition having a plurality of addressable storage locations for holding items in the cache memory. A partition indicator is allocated to each process identifying which, if any, of said cache partitions is to be used for holding items for use in the execution of that process. When the processor requests an item from main memory during execution of said current process and that item is not held in the cache memory, the item is fetched from main memory and loaded into one of the plurality of addressable storage locations in the identified cache partition.

A computer system has instructions which have a reduction in the number of address bits relative to the number of data items that may be held during instruction execution. The instruction set comprises selectable instructions, a plurality of the instructions each including one set of bit locations identifying an operation to be carried out by execution of the instruction and a second set of bit locations to identify an address of a data storage location for use in execution of the instruction. The computer system further includes a plurality of addressable data storage locations for holding simultaneously a plurality of data values during execution of a sequence of instructions, with at least one of the data storage locations comprising a multi-value store requiring a single address in an instruction and arranged to hold a plurality of data values simultaneously on a first-in, first-out basis. This therefore increases the number of data values that can be held in relation to the number of addresses that can be identified by the second set of bit locations. A method of executing a succession of instructions in a computer system is also described.

System and method for addressing plurality of data values with a single address in a multi-value store on FIFO basis

In this paper we present the communication protocol that we use to implement first class channels. Ordinary channels allow data communication (like CSP/Occam); first class channels allow communicating channel ends over a channel. This enables processes to exchange communication capabilities, making the communication graph highly flexible. In this paper we present a simple protocol to communicate channels over channels, and we show that we can implement this protocol cheaply and safely. The implementation is going to be embedded in, amongst others, ultra mobile computer systems. We envisage that the protocol is so simple that it can be implemented at hardware level.
