Survey on the use of simulation for manufacturing system design and operation

Discrete-event simulation is one of the most popular modelling techniques. It has developed significantly since the inception of computer simulation in the 1950s, most of this in line with developments in computing. The progress of simulation from its early days is charted with a particular focus on recent history. Specific developments in the past 15 years include visual interactive modelling, simulation optimization, virtual reality, integration with other software, simulation in the service sector, distributed simulation and the use of the worldwide web. The future is then speculated upon. Potential changes in model development, model use, the domain of application for simulation and integration with other simulation approaches are all discussed. The desirability of continuing to follow developments in computing, without significant developments in the wider methodology of simulation, is questioned.

The CRC handbook of mechanical engineering

The paper describes an application of discrete event simulation for shop floor control for a flexible manufacturing system. In this application, the simulation is used not only as an analysis and evaluation tool, but also as a "task generator" for the specification of shop floor control tasks. Using this approach, the effort applied to the development of the simulation is not duplicated in the development of the control system. Instead, the same control logic is used for the control system as was used for the simulation. Additionally, since the simulation implements the control, it provides very high fidelity performance predictions. Implementation experience in two flexible manufacturing laboratories is described. These implementations use a special feature of the Arena/SIMAN simulation language which allows Arena/SIMAN to interact directly with the shop floor control system through an interprocess communication mechanism. This feature is described in detail.

Discrete event simulation for shop floor control

A primary text in introductory and perhaps second courses in simulation at both the under-graduate and beginning-graduate levels. Such simulation courses are found in departments of industrial and systems engineering, most business schools, and many computer-science departments; simulation courses are also found in other engineering disciplines (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical), mathe- matics, statistics, epidemiology, and agriculture. The text or components of it could also support a simulation module of a few weeks within a larger sur- vey course in programs without a stand-alone simulation course (e.g., MBA). It is written in an accessible tutorial-style writing approach centered around specific examples rather than general concepts, and covers a variety of appli-cations. Our experience has shown that these characteristics make the text easier to read and absorb, as well as appealing to students from many dfferent backgrounds.

Simio and Simulation: Modeling, Analysis, Applications

This paper describes the Simio™ modeling system that is designed to simplify model building by promoting a modeling paradigm shift from the process orientation to an object orientation. Simio is a simulation modeling framework based on intelligent objects. The intelligent objects are built by modelers and then may be reused in multiple modeling projects. Although the Simio framework is focused on object-based modeling, it also supports a seamless use of multiple modeling paradigms including event, process, object, systems dynamics, agent-based modeling, and Risk-based Planning and scheduling (RPS).
