Automated Planning: Theory and Practice.

The increasing tendency of network service users to use cloud computing encourages web service vendors to supply services that have different functional and nonfunctional (quality of service) features and provide them in a service pool. Based on supply and demand rules and because of the exuberant growth of the services that are offered, cloud service brokers face tough competition against each other in providing quality of service enhancements. Such competition leads to a difficult and complicated process to provide simple service selection and composition in supplying composite services in the cloud, which should be considered an NP-hard problem. How to select appropriate services from the service pool, overcome composition restrictions, determine the importance of different quality of service parameters, focus on the dynamic characteristics of the problem, and address rapid changes in the properties of the services and network appear to be among the most important issues that must be investigated and addressed. In this paper, utilizing a systematic literature review, important questions that can be raised about the research performed in addressing the above-mentioned problem have been extracted and put forth. Then, by dividing the research into four main groups based on the problem-solving approaches and identifying the investigated quality of service parameters, intended objectives, and developing environments, beneficial results and statistics are obtained that can contribute to future research.

Review: Cloud computing service composition: A systematic literature review

An important research area of Spectrum-Based Fault Localization (SBFL) is the effectiveness of risk evaluation formulas. Most previous studies have adopted an empirical approach, which can hardly be considered as sufficiently comprehensive because of the huge number of combinations of various factors in SBFL. Though some studies aimed at overcoming the limitations of the empirical approach, none of them has provided a completely satisfactory solution. Therefore, we provide a theoretical investigation on the effectiveness of risk evaluation formulas. We define two types of relations between formulas, namely, equivalent and better. To identify the relations between formulas, we develop an innovative framework for the theoretical investigation. Our framework is based on the concept that the determinant for the effectiveness of a formula is the number of statements with risk values higher than the risk value of the faulty statement. We group all program statements into three disjoint sets with risk values higher than, equal to, and lower than the risk value of the faulty statement, respectively. For different formulas, the sizes of their sets are compared using the notion of subset. We use this framework to identify the maximal formulas which should be the only formulas to be used in SBFL.

ContextSemantically annotating web services is gaining more attention as an important aspect to support the automatic matchmaking and composition of web services. Therefore, the support of well-known and agreed ontologies and tools for the semantical annotation of web services is becoming a key concern to help the diffusion of semantic web services. ObjectiveThe objective of this systematic literature review is to summarize the current state-of-the-art for supporting the semantical annotation of web services by providing answers to a set of research questions. MethodThe review follows a predefined procedure that involves automatically searching well-known digital libraries. As a result, a total of 35 primary studies were identified as relevant. A manual search led to the identification of 9 additional primary studies that were not reported during the automatic search of the digital libraries. Required information was extracted from these 44 studies against the selected research questions and finally reported. ResultsOur systematic literature review identified some approaches available for semantically annotating functional and non-functional aspects of web services. However, many of the approaches are either not validated or the validation done lacks credibility. ConclusionWe believe that a substantial amount of work remains to be done to improve the current state of research in the area of supporting semantic web services.

Supporting the semi-automatic semantic annotation of web services

Web services, service-oriented, and service-discovery architectures help developers solve complex business cases, reduce costs, risks, and time-to-market. The task of developers is challenged by the difficulty of guaranteeing interoperability with target web services, since the lack of information about the interaction protocol of dynamically discovered web services may lead to unexpected runtime failures. This paper proposes an approach to design self-adaptive service-oriented architectures. The approach enables clients to automatically adapt their behavior to alternative web services that provide compatible functionality through different interaction protocols. It uses an infrastructure that traces the successful interactions of the web services, automatically synthesize models that approximate the interaction protocols, and steer client-side adaptations at runtime.

Towards self-adaptive service-oriented architectures

On the wave of the success in the wire-line world, IP technology is going to play a dominant role even in the wireless scenarios. In a few years, more people are going to access the Internet from mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones and not only for accessing business applications. A wide variety of old and new services are going to be accessible from mobile terminals like instant messaging, video streaming, infocommercial and infotainment applications, games, only to make a few examples. With the development of 3rd Generation (3G) wireless systems, operators are expecting to make new revenue from data services. In this scenario, push technology combined with location and presence services is expected to have a relevant role as enabler of new service features and new service paradigms. Challenging applications of infotainment and infocommercial provided by mobile operators and third parties can be empowered by push platforms integrated in the mobile network. This paper introduces the concept of enhanced push services and discusses architectural solutions for the provision of push based services.

An advanced architecture for push services

Open Source Software development often resembles Agile models. In this paper, we report about our experience in using SCRUM for the development of an Open Source Software Java tool. With this work, we aim at answering the following research questions: 1) is it possible to switch successfully to the SCRUM methodology in an ongoing Open Source Software development process? 2) is it possible to apply SCRUM when the developers are geographically distributed? 3) does SCRUM help improve the quality of the product and the productivity of the process? We answer to these questions by identifying a set of measures and by comparing the data we collected before and after the introduction of SCRUM. The results seem to show that SCRUM can be introduced and used in an ongoing geographically distributed Open Source Software process and that it helps control the development process better.
