Optical wireless communication (OWC) refers to transmission in unguided propagation media through the use of optical carriers, i.e., visible, infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) bands. In this survey, we focus on outdoor terrestrial OWC links which operate in near IR band. These are widely referred to as free space optical (FSO) communication in the literature. FSO systems are used for high rate communication between two fixed points over distances up to several kilometers. In comparison to radio-frequency (RF) counterparts, FSO links have a very high optical bandwidth available, allowing much higher data rates. They are appealing for a wide range of applications such as metropolitan area network (MAN) extension, local area network (LAN)-to-LAN connectivity, fiber back-up, backhaul for wireless cellular networks, disaster recovery, high definition TV and medical image/video transmission, wireless video surveillance/monitoring, and quantum key distribution among others. Despite the major advantages of FSO technology and variety of its application areas, its widespread use has been hampered by its rather disappointing link reliability particularly in long ranges due to atmospheric turbulence-induced fading and sensitivity to weather conditions. In the last five years or so, there has been a surge of interest in FSO research to address these major technical challenges. Several innovative physical layer concepts, originally introduced in the context of RF systems, such as multiple-input multiple-output communication, cooperative diversity, and adaptive transmission have been recently explored for the design of next generation FSO systems. In this paper, we present an up-to-date survey on FSO communication systems. The first part describes FSO channel models and transmitter/receiver structures. In the second part, we provide details on information theoretical limits of FSO channels and algorithmic-level system design research activities to approach these limits. Specific topics include advances in modulation, channel coding, spatial/cooperative diversity techniques, adaptive transmission, and hybrid RF/FSO systems.

Survey on Free Space Optical Communication: A Communication Theory Perspective

We investigate the performance and design of free-space optical (FSO) communication links over slow fading channels from an information theory perspective. A statistical model for the optical intensity fluctuation at the receiver due to the combined effects of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is derived. Unlike earlier work, our model considers the effect of beam width, detector size, and jitter variance explicitly. Expressions for the outage probability are derived for a variety of atmospheric conditions. For given weather and misalignment conditions, the beam width is optimized to maximize the channel capacity subject to outage. Large gains in achievable rate are realized versus using a nominal beam width. In light fog, by optimizing the beam width, the achievable rate is increased by 80% over the nominal beam width at an outage probability of 10-5. Well-known error control codes are then applied to the channel and shown to realize much of the achievable gains.

Urban optical wireless communication networks: the main challenges and possible solutions

Atmospheric turbulence can cause a significant performance degradation in free-space optical communication systems. It is well known that the effect of turbulence can be reduced by performing aperture averaging and/or employing spatial diversity at the receiver. In this paper, we provide a synthesis on the effectiveness of these techniques under different atmospheric turbulence conditions from a telecommunication point of view. In particular, we quantify the performance improvement in terms of average bit error rate (BER) and outage capacity, which are among important parameters in practice. The efficiency of channel coding and the feasibility of exploiting time diversity in aperture averaging receivers are discussed as well. We also compare single- and multiple-aperture systems from the point of view of fading reduction by considering uncorrelated fading on adjacent apertures for the latter case. We show that when the receiver is background noise limited, the use of multiple apertures is largely preferred to a single large aperture under strong turbulence conditions. A single aperture is likely to be preferred under moderate turbulence conditions, however. When the receiver is thermal noise limited, even under strong turbulence conditions, the use of multiple apertures is interesting only when working at a very low BER. We also provide discussions on several practical issues related to system implementation.

Optical communications

We investigate robust optical wireless communication in a highly scattering propagation medium using multielement optical detector arrays. The communication setup consists of synchronized multiple transmitters that send information to a receiver array and an atmospheric propagation channel. The mathematical model that best describes this scenario is multi-input to multi-output communication through stochastic slow changing channels. In this model, signals from m transmitters are received by n receiver-detectors. The channel transfer function matrix is G, and its size is n x m. G(i,j) is the transfer function from transmitter i to detector j, and m > or = n. We adopt a quasi-stationary approach in which the channel time variation has a negligible effect on communication performance over a burst. The G matrix is calculated on the basis of the optical transfer function of the atmospheric channel (composed of aerosol and turbulence elements) and the receiver's optics. In this work we derive a performance model using environmental data, such as documented turbulence and aerosol models and noise statistics. We also present the results of simulations conducted for the proposed detection algorithm.

Analysis of the performance of a wireless optical multi-input to multi-output communication system

This work analyzes laser communication between a cluster of nanosatellites, which is a concentrated formation of small lightweight satellites and a ground station. The scenario under consideration is a cluster of nanosatellites communicating by means of a laser beam with a detector array receiver that is located on the earth's surface and equipped with a common optical system for all incoming beams. The beams are concentrated to spots over the detector plane by the receiver's optics. The detector array enables the ground station to communicate with a tight concentration of the nanosatellites, which reduces system complexity and cost. A critical parameter that determines the successful receipt and subsequent decoding of a transmitted signal for a given configuration is the angular separation between the satellites within the cluster. This separation must be retained to prevent critical overlapping of the spots on the detector's surface. The maximum allowable overlapping is calculated in terms of given bit-error rate. The spatial spreading of the beams, caused by scattering from aerosols in different layers of the atmosphere, is calculated for the case of single scattering. A stratified model of the atmosphere is used. Turbulence influences the beam width, especially for the case of short exposure, and is primarily caused by temperature changes, which result in fluctuations in the refractive index. In this research, a new approach is adopted for analyzing communication network performance through the atmosphere by applying optical-transfer function (OTF) concepts used in imaging and remote sensing. We evaluate the effectiveness of this new approach in applications where spatial spread between the users is very important.

Analyzing performance of nano-satellite cluster - detector array receiver laser communication

Optical wireless communication is expected to become a promising solution for the "last mile problem". But while laser communication in space can transmit information over long distances without great distortion, terrestrial laser communication systems encounter some serious problems. This is due to the fact that the propagation takes place through the atmosphere, where phenomena such as scattering and turbulence are widespread. We suggest a novel "systems approach" for investigating optical terrestrial communication. Thus it is possible to analyze the communication performance for a number of links simultaneously. The approach is based on concepts borrowed from imaging theory. These concepts involve the use of the optical transfer function (OTF), which describes the object in terms of spatial frequencies. We use some of the models that were developed to characterize the atmospheric channel as a general configuration of an optical communication system. An appropriate trial example of the use of the imaging approach within the communication sphere was selected; this was the calculation of the minimal angular separation between user stations. The critical angle was determined by studying communication performance parameters of the main signal such as BER, for a specific detector array.
