The primary purpose of this article is to clarify the nature of the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) construct and to propose a contingency framework for investigating the relationship between EO and firm performance. We first explore and refine the dimensions of EO and discuss the usefulness of viewing a firm's EO as a multidimensional construct. Then, drawing on examples from the EO-related contingencies literature, we suggest alternative models (moderating effects, mediating effects, independent effects, interaction effects) for testing the EO-performance relationship.

Entrepreneurial Orientation and Business Performance: An Assessment of Past Research and Suggestions for the Future

This paper describes a study of the impact of industry technological sophistication on the strategy-related characteristics of entrepeneurial firms. Data were collected from the senior-most managers of 75 small manufacturing firms with highly entrepeneurial strategic postures. Results indicate that industry technologicl sophistication moderates the strength of the relationships between many strategic variables (variables that define the content of business strategy such as the product price, customer credit, operating efficiency, etc.) and firm performance. Cluster analysis revealed several patterns of strategic variables among the entrepeneurial firms. The composition of these clusters suggests that the modes of competition differ for entrepeneurial firms in high and low technology industries.

An Overview of Behavioral Issues in Project Management

This analysis develops a conceptual model of entrepreneurial behavior at the organizational level. Entrepreneurship is considered to be a dimension of strategic posture, and thus all manner of organizationals may behave entrepreneurially. This strategic posture encompasses a firm's risk-taking propensity, its ability to be competitively aggressive, proactive manners, and product innovation. Key characteristics for the creation of this organizational model are presented -- the dependent variable is firm performance; environmental, organization, and individual level variables are utilized; and both direct and moderator effects are included. The external variables consist of environmental technological sophistication, environmental dynamism, environmental hostility, and industry life cycle stage, while the internal variables are top management values and philosophies, organizational resources and competencies, organizational culture, and organizational structure. Strategic variables are mission strategy and business practices and competitive tactics. Forty-four propositions are derived from this model. Among the theoretical and managerial implications. First, firms should be viewed as entrepreneurial entities, and this entrepreneurial behavior is often an integral part of the firm's management. Further, entrepreneurial posture can be managed.
