The Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) is a 524-orbit Multi-Cycle Treasury Program to use the gravitational lensing properties of 25 galaxy clusters to accurately constrain their mass distributions. The survey, described in detail in this paper, will definitively establish the degree of concentration of dark matter in the cluster cores, a key prediction of structure formation models. The CLASH cluster sample is larger and less biased than current samples of space-based imaging studies of clusters to similar depth, as we have minimized lensing-based selection that favors systems with overly dense cores. Specifically, 20 CLASH clusters are solely X-ray selected. The X-ray-selected clusters are massive (kT > 5 keV) and, in most cases, dynamically relaxed. Five additional clusters are included for their lensing strength (θ_Ein > 35" at z_s = 2) to optimize the likelihood of finding highly magnified high-z (z > 7) galaxies. A total of 16 broadband filters, spanning the near-UV to near-IR, are employed for each 20-orbit campaign on each cluster. These data are used to measure precise (σ_z ~ 0.02(1 + z)) photometric redshifts for newly discovered arcs. Observations of each cluster are spread over eight epochs to enable a search for Type Ia supernovae at z > 1 to improve constraints on the time dependence of the dark energy equation of state and the evolution of supernovae. We present newly re-derived X-ray luminosities, temperatures, and Fe abundances for the CLASH clusters as well as a representative source list for MACS1149.6+2223 (z = 0.544).

The cluster lensing and supernova survey with hubble: an overview

We report on 23 clusters detected blindly as Sunyaev-ZEL'DOVICH (SZ) decrements in a 148 GHz, 455 deg2 map of the southern sky made with data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope 2008 observing season. All SZ detections announced in this work have confirmed optical counterparts. Ten of the clusters are new discoveries. One newly discovered cluster, ACT-CL J0102–4915, with a redshift of 0.75 (photometric), has an SZ decrement comparable to the most massive systems at lower redshifts. Simulations of the cluster recovery method reproduce the sample purity measured by optical follow-up. In particular, for clusters detected with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than six, simulations are consistent with optical follow-up that demonstrated this subsample is 100% pure. The simulations further imply that the total sample is 80% complete for clusters with mass in excess of 6 × 1014 solar masses referenced to the cluster volume characterized by 500 times the critical density. The Compton y-X-ray luminosity mass comparison for the 11 best-detected clusters visually agrees with both self-similar and non-adiabatic, simulation-derived scaling laws.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-Selected Galaxy Clusters at 148 GHz in the 2008 Survey

We present a joint shear-and-magnification weak-lensing analysis of a sample of 16 X-ray-regular and 4 high-magnification galaxy clusters at 0.19 ≾ z ≾ 0.69 selected from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). Our analysis uses wide-field multi-color imaging, taken primarily with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. From a stacked-shear-only analysis of the X-ray-selected subsample, we detect the ensemble-averaged lensing signal with a total signal-to-noise ratio of ≃ 25 in the radial range of 200-3500 kpc h^(–1), providing integrated constraints on the halo profile shape and concentration-mass relation. The stacked tangential-shear signal is well described by a family of standard density profiles predicted for dark-matter-dominated halos in gravitational equilibrium, namely, the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW), truncated variants of NFW, and Einasto models. For the NFW model, we measure a mean concentration of c_(200c)=4.01^(+0.35)_(-0.32) at an effective halo mass of M_(200c)=1.34^(+0.10)_(-0.09) x 10^(15)M_☉. We show that this is in excellent agreement with Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) predictions when the CLASH X-ray selection function and projection effects are taken into account. The best-fit Einasto shape parameter is ɑ_E=0.191^(+0.071)_(-0.068), which is consistent with the NFW-equivalent Einasto parameter of ~0.18. We reconstruct projected mass density profiles of all CLASH clusters from a joint likelihood analysis of shear-and-magnification data and measure cluster masses at several characteristic radii assuming an NFW density profile. We also derive an ensemble-averaged total projected mass profile of the X-ray-selected subsample by stacking their individual mass profiles. The stacked total mass profile, constrained by the shear+magnification data, is shown to be consistent with our shear-based halo-model predictions, including the effects of surrounding large-scale structure as a two-halo term, establishing further consistency in the context of the ΛCDM model.

Clash: weak-lensing shear-and-magnification analysis of 20 galaxy clusters*

(Abridged) We use Subaru data to conduct a detailed weak-lensing study of the dark matter distribution in a sample of 30 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at 0.15<z<0.3. A weak-lensing signal is detected at high statistical significance in each cluster, the total detection S/N ranging from 5 to 13. In this paper we concentrate on fitting spherical models to the tangential distortion profiles of the clusters. When the models are fitted to the clusters individually, we are unable to discriminate statistically between SIS and NFW models. However when the tangential distortion profiles of the individual clusters are combined, and models fitted to the stacked profile, the SIS model is rejected at 6- and 11-sigma, respectively, for low- and high-mass bins. We also use the individual cluster NFW model fits to investigate the relationship between cluster mass (M_vir) and concentration (c_vir), finding an anti-correlation of c_vir and M_vir. The best-fit c_vir-M_vir relation is: c_vir(M_vir) propto M_vir^{-alpha} with alpha=0.41+/-0.19 -- i.e. a non-zero slope is detected at 2sigma significance. We then investigate the optimal radius within which to measure cluster mass, finding that the typical fractional errors are improved to sigma(M_Delta)/M_Delta ~ 0.1-0.2 for cluster masses at higher over-densities Delta=500-2000, from 0.2-0.3 for the virial over-density (~110). Further comparisons between mass measurements based on spherical model fitting and the model-independent aperture mass method reveal that the 2D aperture mass enclosed within a cylinder of a given aperture radius is systematically greater than the 3D spherical mass obtained from NFW model fitting: M_2D/M_3D= 1.34 and 1.40 for Delta=500 and 110, respectively. The amplitude of this effect agrees well with that predicted by integrating the NFW model along the line-of-sight.

LoCuSS: Subaru Weak Lensing Study of 30 Galaxy Clusters

We study the bias and scatter in mass measurements of galaxy clusters resulting from fitting a spherically symmetric Navarro, Frenk, & White model to the reduced tangential shear profile measured in weak-lensing (WL) observations. The reduced shear profiles are generated for 104 cluster-sized halos formed in a ?CDM cosmological N-body simulation of a 1?h ?1 Gpc box. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the scatter in the WL masses derived using this fitting method has irreducible contributions from the triaxial shapes of cluster-sized halos and uncorrelated large-scale matter projections along the line of sight. Additionally, we find that correlated large-scale structure within several virial radii of clusters contributes a smaller, but nevertheless significant, amount to the scatter. The intrinsic scatter due to these physical sources is 20% for massive clusters and can be as high as 30% for group-sized systems. For current, ground-based observations, however, the total scatter should be dominated by shape noise from the background galaxies used to measure the shear. Importantly, we find that WL mass measurements can have a small, 5%-10%, but non-negligible amount of bias. Given that WL measurements of cluster masses are a powerful way to calibrate cluster mass-observable relations for precision cosmological constraints, we strongly emphasize that a robust calibration of the bias requires detailed simulations that include more observational effects than we consider here. Such a calibration exercise needs to be carried out for each specific WL mass estimation method, as the details of the method determine in part the expected scatter and bias. We present an iterative method for estimating mass M 500c that can eliminate the bias for analyses of ground-based data.

On the accuracy of weak-lensing cluster mass reconstructions

An automatic level control (ALC) procedure is designed to stabilize the gain drift in the array for microwave background anisotropy (AMiBA) caused by the diurnal temperature change. We make use of a feedback proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control approach to maintain the optimal sensitivity in the AMiBA radio telescope for detecting the extremely faint variations in the cosmic microwave background. A typical ALC commonly used in radio telescope works by injecting a known noise source into the receiver periodically. From there, observers can tune a variable device to match the desired level. This approach requires a lot of hardware, resulting in higher costs and making the system more complicated. Our proposed ALC procedure will make use of a mathematic model to derive the signal level of each receiver channel. The 7-elements AMiBA interferometric array generates a total of twenty-one sets of correlated data during any instance of observation. Utilizing this set of overly constrained data, we have devised two online conversion formulae to derive the signal levels from each individual receiver element. Subsequently, the derived data set is fed back into the PID control program embedded in a Linux computer, after which the output from the PID will be fed to the variable gain amplifiers(VGA) for the second stage of gain control. This report will expound on the details of the work and the methodology employed, also preliminary result of one of the methods is presented.
