In this paper, the effect of pulse current changes in the Pulsed Current Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (PCGTAW) on the various properties of dissimilar welding of AISI 316L-AISI 310S stainless steels was investigated. 10 mm thickness steel sheets were joined by the PCGTAW process with the background current (Ib) of 55, 70 and 85A, as well as the peak current (Ip) of 110, 130 and 150A. Then, optical microscopy (OM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques were used to study the microstructural evolution in different areas of the welded joints. Also, tensile, Charpy impact and Vickers microhardness tests were used to evaluate the effect of the pulsed current changes on mechanical properties. Finally, the fracture surfaces of Charpy impact and tensile tests samples were studied by FE-SEM. The weld metal (WM) microstructure consisted of austenite dendrites together with a low amount of delta ferrite in the grain-boundaries. Results also showed that by increasing Ib and decreasing Ip, the microstructure of the WM was changed from columnar dendritic to coaxial, and a very fine, dendritic one. This condition led to the reduction of the size of the dendrites and the amount of delta ferrite ingrain boundaries of the WM, as well as a reduction in the width of Unmixed Zone (UMZ) area. Moreover, all the welded joints were fractured from the AISI 316L stainless steels side. However, the results of the Charpy impact and microhardness tests showed that with the above variation in the welding parameters, hardness value and fracture energy of the WM increased significantly. Fractography of the surfaces showed a completely ductile fracture for both tensile and Charpy impact tests samples.

GMAW dissimilar welding of AISI 409 ferritic stainless steel to AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel by using AISI 308 filler wire

In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to join Hastelloy C-276 nickel-based superalloy and AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel using ERNiCrMo-4 filler. The joints were fabricated by continuous and pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding processes. Experimental studies to ascertain the structure-property co-relationship with or without pulsed current mode were carried out using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Further, the energy-dispersive spectroscope was used to evaluate the extent of microsegregation. The microstructure of fusion zone was obtained as finer cellular dendritic structure for pulsed current mode, whereas columnar structure was formed with small amount of cellular structure for continuous current mode. The scanning electron microscope examination witnessed the existence of migrated grain boundaries at the weld interfaces. Moreover, the presence of secondary phases such as P and μ was observed in continuous current weld joints, whereas they were absent in pulsed current weld joints, which needs to be further characterized. Moreover, pulsed current joints resulted in narrower weld bead, refined morphology, reduced elemental segregation and improved strength of the welded joints. The outcomes of the present investigation would help in obtaining good quality dissimilar joints for industrial applications and AISI 321 ASS being cheaper consequently led to cost-effective design also.

Effect of Continuous and Pulsed Current Gas Tungsten Arc Welding on Dissimilar Weldments Between Hastelloy C-276/AISI 321 Austenitic Stainless Steel

In this paper, the effect of continuous and pulsed current in the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) on the various properties of an AISI 316L stainless steel joints was investigated. 316L austenitic stainless steel sheets with a thickness of 10 mm were used together with ER309L filler. The sheets were welded together by the GTAW technique in two modes of continuous and pulsed currents. Microstructural characterization and phase equilibria were done using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) equipped with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) detector, techniques. Charpy impact, uniaxial tensile, and microhardness tests were used to investigate the effect of the type of the welding current on mechanical properties of the joints. The fracture surfaces were evaluated by FE-SEM after tensile and Charpy impact tests. Results showed that the weld metal (WM) microstructure is austenitic-ferritic (AF). It was also consisted of columnar and coaxial structures, in a way that varying the welding current from continuous to the pulsed mode changed the morphology of the grains from elongated columnar to a fine coaxial morphology. In addition, such a change in the welding current reduced the size of the grains in the WM, and the width of the unmixed zone (UMZ) as well. XRD analysis showed that the predominant phase and the preferred crystal plane of the WM are austenite, and (111), respectively. Both joints were broken from the base metal (BM) during the tensile test. Also, the above change of the welding current mode increased hardness and fracture toughness of the WM. Finally, fractography of the joints indicated that both joints experienced a completely ductile fracture.

Study on the fiber laser/TIG weldability of AISI 304 and AISI 410 dissimilar weld

In this research work, the weldability of low alloyed AISI 4340 aeronautical steel and AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel joined by continuous current (CC) and pulsed current (PC) gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) techniques, using ER309L and ERNiCr-3 filler metals was investigated. The main focus of the study involves the investigation on the effect of continuous and pulsed current mode of GTA welding process on the metallurgical and mechanical properties of these dissimilar weldments. Microstructure studies revealed the formation of different zones across the weldments, vis-a-vis martensite at the HAZ of AISI 4340, vermicular δ - ferrite /ferrite stringers at the HAZ of AISI 304L, pearlite colonies at the parent metal of AISI 4340 and equi-axed cellular and/or columnar dendrites at the weld zone. Tensile results showed that current pulsing accrued better tensile properties. The structure - property relationships of these weldments were established based on the current modes employed by utilizing combined techniques of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
