The systematic value of pollen morphology in Chresta Vell. ex DC. (Vernonieae, Asteraceae).

The morphology of 75 different pollen grains from 67 species of genus Solanum L., two species of genus Cyphomandra Sendt., and six species of genus Lycianthes (Dunal) Hassl. was studied using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Among them, the pollen of 66 species is described for the first time. Our results suggest that the sexine ornamention of Solanum, Cyphomandra and Lycianthes is extremely similar, but the apertures of genus Solanum and Cyphomandra are not syncolpate while those of genus Lycianthes are syncolpate. Overall, we argued that the Solanum species studied demonstrated sufficient pollinic heterogeneity in their shapes, aperture feature and sexine ornamentation to enable their palynological characterisation and support the point of view that the genus Cyphomandra should be merged into Solanum, but Lycianthes should be an independent genus from the aspect of palynology.

Pollen morphology of selected species from the family Solanaceae

This paper presents the results of a palynological study of the species ofGraphistylis that were segregated fromSenecio (s.l.) (Seneciosect. Dichroa) and that are all endemic of Brazil. These species are found in mountainous regions of the states of Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Parana, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Santa Catarina. The pollen grains of eight species were acetolyzed and analyzed and photographed using light microscopy. Unacetolyzed pollen grains were analyzed and photomicrographed using scanning electron microscopy. The current study undertook a palynologically analysis of Graphistylis in order to obtain information useful for making a better ranking of these genus. The results show medium-sized pollen grains that were oblate spheroidal or prolate spheroidal and subtriangular amb and tricolporate. The pollen grains possessed lalongate endoapertures with a median constriction and the presence of costa in only two species. The exine is echinate with a varying number of spines in the apocolpium region around the central spine in polar view. The spines are short with basal perforations at varying distances. Although the morphology of the pollen of species ofGraphistylis is very similar, multivariate analysis highlights the importance of quantitative traits in distinguishing species.

Pollen morphology of species of Graphistylis B. Nord. (Asteraceae) of Brazil

Extra-Amazonian Brazil comprises a region with vegetation formations representing the Caatinga (drylands), Cerrado (neotropical savanna), Atlantic Forest, Pantanal (seasonally inundated) and Pampa (grassland) biomes with high species richness. Pollen Diversity in Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) from Extra-Amazonian Brazil

Bacterial cystitis is a common clinical problem among cats and dogs and is one of the main reasons for the administration of antimicrobials. This can cause serious damage to public and animal health, as this practice facilitates the selection of bacteria that are multidrug-resistant to antibiotics. In this context, it is urgent to understand and validate therapeutic modalities that complement antimicrobial treatment in cystitis cases. Ozone therapy has been proposed by scientists owing to the various mechanisms of action in a range of pathologies, both in human and animal medicine. This paper describes the bactericidal action of two different protocols of bladder irrigation with ozonized saline solution (59 μg/mL) in a paraplegic canine with recurrent bacterial cystitis caused by Proteus spp. In the first protocol, the bladder instillations were applied once a day for three consecutive days while in the second, successive lavages were performed throughout the day until a significant reduction in the presence of bacteria in the urine sediment. In this study, we were able to demonstrate that repeated bladder instillation within 24 hours was the most effective treatment for Proteus compared to a single instillation on successive days.
