The Jacobi inversion theorem leads to functions of several variables with many periods. So, we are led to the problem of developing a theory of them which is analogous to the theory of elliptic functions. First of all, we need to give an introduction to the theory of functions of several complex variables. In this chapter, we give an elementary introduction which essentially follows Weierstrass. One of the main topics will be the proof of the theorem that any meromorphic function on ℂn can be written as a quotient of two entire functions. Weierstrass called this a very difficult problem. The first proof was given by Poincare. In the case n = 1, it is not difficult to show this by means of the theory of Weierstrass products, even for arbitrary domains D ⊂ ℂ instead of ℂ. The case n > 1 is more involved, since the zero sets and pole sets of analytic functions of several complex variables are not discrete.

Bohr showed that the width of the strip (in the complex plane) on which a given Dirichlet seriesan/n s , s ∈ C, converges uniformly but not absolutely, is at most 1/2, and Bohnenblust-Hille that this bound in general is optimal. We prove that for a given infinite dimensional Banach space Y the width of Bohr's strip for a Dirichlet series with coefficients an in Y is bounded by 1 −1/Cot(Y ), where Cot(Y ) denotes the optimal cotype of Y. This estimate even turns out to be optimal, and hence leads to a new characterization of cotype in terms of vector valued Dirichlet series. Bohr's strip for vector valued Dirichlet series

Over 100 years ago Harald Bohr identified a deep problem about the convergence of Dirichlet series, and introduced an ingenious idea relating Dirichlet series and holomorphic functions in high dimensions. Elaborating on this work, almost twnety years later Bohnenblust and Hille solved the problem posed by Bohr. In recent years there has been a substantial revival of interest in the research area opened up by these early contributions. This involves the intertwining of the classical work with modern functional analysis, harmonic analysis, infinite dimensional holomorphy and probability theory as well as analytic number theory. New challenging research problems have crystallized and been solved in recent decades. The goal of this book is to describe in detail some of the key elements of this new research area to a wide audience. The approach is based on three pillars: Dirichlet series, infinite dimensional holomorphy and harmonic analysis.

It is shown that for every quasi-normed ideal ${\cal Q}$ of n-homogeneous continuous polynomials between Banach spaces there is a quasi-normed ideal ${\cal A}$ of n-linear continuous mappings ${\cal A}$ such that $q \in {\cal Q}$ if and only if the associated n-linear mapping $\check{q}$ of q is in ${\cal A}$.
