TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the rate constant for the collisional relaxation of a buffer gas of He vanishes as the temperature decreases below 1 K. This suggests that the buffer-gas loading technique can be used for trapping excited paramagnetic atoms at ultracold temperatures.
Abstract: We demonstrate that the rate constant for the collisional relaxation of $\mathrm{C}{(}^{3}{P}_{1})$ in a buffer gas of He vanishes as the temperature decreases below 1 K. This suggests that the buffer-gas loading technique can be used for trapping excited paramagnetic $\mathrm{C}{(}^{3}{P}_{1})$ atoms at ultracold temperatures.
