: Successful Software reuse requires the systematic discovery and exploitation of commonality across related software systems. By examining related software systems and the underlying theory of the class of systems they represent, domain analysis can provide a generic description of the requirements of that class of systems and a set of approaches for their implementation. This report will establish methods for performing a domain analysis and describe the products of the domain analysis process. To illustrate the application of domain analysis to a representative class of software systems, this report will provide a domain analysis of window management system software.

Feature-Oriented Domain Analysis (FODA) Feasibility Study

Aspect] is a simple and practical aspect-oriented extension to Java With just a few new constructs, AspectJ provides support for modular implementation of a range of crosscutting concerns. In AspectJ's dynamic join point model, join points are well-defined points in the execution of the program; pointcuts are collections of join points; advice are special method-like constructs that can be attached to pointcuts; and aspects are modular units of crosscutting implementation, comprising pointcuts, advice, and ordinary Java member declarations. AspectJ code is compiled into standard Java bytecode. Simple extensions to existing Java development environments make it possible to browse the crosscutting structure of aspects in the same kind of way as one browses the inheritance structure of classes. Several examples show that AspectJ is powerful, and that programs written using it are easy to understand.

The C programming language

A software product line leverages the knowledge of one or more domains in order to achieve short time-to-market, cost savings, and high quality software. The highest level of reuse comes by using domain-specific languages or visual builders to describe a member of the product line, and to generate the member from the description. Generative techniques can help us to capture the configuration knowledge for a product line and use it to generate concrete family members. This workshop focuses on technical issues of product lines, rather than economic issues.

P++ is a programming language that supports the GenVoca model, a particular style of software design that is intended for building software system generators. P++ is an enhanced version of C++: it offers linguistic extensions for component encapsulation, abstraction, parameterization, and inheritance, where a component is a suite of interrelated classes and functions. This paper describes the motivations for P++, the ideas which underlie its design, the syntax and features of the language, and related areas of research.

P++: A Language for Software System Generators

VLSI CAD ojbects involve several representations. For each representation, designers experiment with multiple versions. In this paper, we first outline a logical framework that captures the dimensionalities in CAD objects and their versions, and then outline a storage technique that balances the requirements for reducing storage redundancy and fast access to different versions of the same design object.

A Model and Storage Technique for Versions of VLSI CAD Objects

A classical approach to program derivation is to progressively extend a simple specification and then incrementally refine it to an implementation. We claim this approach is hard or impractical when reverse engineering legacy software architectures. We present a case study that shows optimizations and pushouts---in addition to refinements and extensions---are essential for practical stepwise development of complex software architectures.

Pushouts in software architecture design

This paper describes the major research tasks currently being undertaken at the Database Systems Research and Development Center of the University of Florida in the area of management of statistical databases. It presents the progress made to date and accomplishments related to the following: 1) the development of a semantic association model and its data language for use in statistical/scientific applications, 2) the study of (a) data mapping between a semantic model and the model used by a particular DBMS and between a logical model and its physical implementation, and (b) view integration problems in database design, 3) the investigation of data compression techniques and the development of a general model of database implementation, and 4) the study of parallel algorithms and database machine techniques for the efficient processing of statistical/scientific databases.
