: Successful Software reuse requires the systematic discovery and exploitation of commonality across related software systems. By examining related software systems and the underlying theory of the class of systems they represent, domain analysis can provide a generic description of the requirements of that class of systems and a set of approaches for their implementation. This report will establish methods for performing a domain analysis and describe the products of the domain analysis process. To illustrate the application of domain analysis to a representative class of software systems, this report will provide a domain analysis of window management system software.

Feature-Oriented Domain Analysis (FODA) Feasibility Study

Aspect] is a simple and practical aspect-oriented extension to Java With just a few new constructs, AspectJ provides support for modular implementation of a range of crosscutting concerns. In AspectJ's dynamic join point model, join points are well-defined points in the execution of the program; pointcuts are collections of join points; advice are special method-like constructs that can be attached to pointcuts; and aspects are modular units of crosscutting implementation, comprising pointcuts, advice, and ordinary Java member declarations. AspectJ code is compiled into standard Java bytecode. Simple extensions to existing Java development environments make it possible to browse the crosscutting structure of aspects in the same kind of way as one browses the inheritance structure of classes. Several examples show that AspectJ is powerful, and that programs written using it are easy to understand.

The C programming language

We present a model of the data structure domain that is expressed in terms of the GenVoca domain modeling concepts [Bat91]. We show how familiar data structures can be encapsulated as realms of plug-compatible, symmetric, and reusable components, and we show how complex data structures can be formed from their composition. The target application of our research is a precompiler for specifying and generating customized data structures.

Implementing a Domain Model for Data Structures

The production of well-understood software will eventually be the responsibility of software generators. Generators will enable high-perforrnance, customized software systems and subsystems to be assembled quickly and cheaply from component libraries. These components will be intelligent: they will encapsulate domain-specific knowledge (e.g., "best practicers approaches) so that their instances will automatically customize and optimize themselves to the system in which they are being used. In this paper, we explore the topics intelligent components and software generation as they pertain to the issues of software productivity, perforrnance, reliability, and quality.

An analytic method for comparing the performance of B+ trees and indexed sequential files is proposed. Preliminary results indicate that indexed sequential files may be more efficient than B+ trees in certain applications.

B+ trees and indexed sequential files: a performance comparison

Architectural evolution is a costly yet unavoidable consequence of a successful application. One method for reducing cost is to automate aspects of the evolutionary cycle when possible. Three kinds of architectural evolution in object-oriented systems are: schema transformations, the introduction of design pattern microarchitectures, and the hot-spot-driven-approach. This paper shows that all three can be viewed as transformations applied to an evolving design. Further, the transformations are automatable with refactorings -- behavior-preserving program transformations. A comprehensive list of refactorings used to evolve large applications is provided and an analysis of supported schema transformations, design patterns, and hot-spot meta patterns is presented. Refactorings enable the evolution of architectures on an if-needed basis reducing unnecessary complexity and inefficiency.

Automating three modes of evolution for object-oriented software architectures

Future software development will rely on product synthesis, i.e., the synthesis of code and non-code artifacts for a target component or application. Prior work on feature-based product synthesis can be understood and generalized using elementary ideas from category theory. Doing so reveals (a) practical and previously unrecognized properties that product synthesis tools must satisfy, and (b) non-obvious generalizations of current techniques that will guide future research efforts in automated product development.
