Most studies of fathers' participation in child care focus on fairness, or domestic democracy. What is sacrificed by fairness-focused studies of family work is attention to the developmental tasks that adult men and women face while building a life together. This article explores the developmental implications for fathers of their underinvolvement in child care using Erikson's conception of adult development and his emphasis on achieving generativity. We suggest processes by which fathers may develop generativity and outline the challenges they face in achieving it. The transition to parenthood often sets mothers and fathers on divergent developmental trajectories that may leave them in different developmental positions. Men's involvement in child care may be crucial to keeping men's and women's development synchronous and hence to maintaining satisfying relationships. Rethinking Fathers' Involvement in Child Care A Developmental Perspective

This introductory chapter to the Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods deals with the sociocultural and historical contexts of family theories and methods as they have developed in the twentieth century. It also addresses the issues of what theory is, what are the bases for evaluating family theory, what are the goals of family theory, and how family scholars have shifted their understandings of the nature of family theory and the research methods used to validate it. As reflected in the quotes above from philosopher Alasdaire MacIntyre and sociologists Mirra Komarovsky and Willard Waller, these questions are simultaneously about social science theory; methodology; application in the realms of education, clinical practice, and public policy; and the social and moral dilemmas of our time.

Family Theories and Methods

Research on philanthropy has made major advances in recent years; however, one issue remains largely unaddressed: the relationship between intraorganizational family-based relatedness and firm philanthropic involvement. The authors seek to remedy this gap by offering and testing the proposition that family firms are more likely to pursue philanthropic involvements. Using a recent typology of family firms, the authors report on the community involvement activities of more than 300 small community hardware stores. Given the small, informal nature of operation and community activity, the authors explore not only their philanthropic activity but also broader community involvement in such areas as business, youth, religious, and service organizations. An interesting trend emerges; firms reporting greater levels of family involvement report greater levels of community involvement than firms identifying themselves as nonfamily enterprises. The authors conclude by reflecting on what this finding suggests for future philanthropy research.
