For a peer-to-peer call in an ad hoc wireless network, a wireless device performs discovery of a target wireless device, performs authentication of the target wireless device and generates a session key (e.g., using a pre-shared key or a certificate provisioned on the wireless device), forms an ad hoc wireless network with the target wireless device, and communicates peer-to-peer with the target wireless device via the ad hoc wireless network. The wireless device may perform discovery with a list of identifiers for wireless devices designated to communicate with this wireless device. The wireless device may derive a service set identifier (SSID) used to identify the ad hoc wireless network based on its user-specific identifier (e.g., its phone number) and/or a user-specific identifier for the target wireless device. The wireless device may also performs IP address discovery using the user-specific identifier for the target wireless device.

System and method for managing multimedia communications across convergent networks

In the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), authentication functions are utilized to identify and authenticate a mobile station (MS) and validate the service request type to ensure that the user is authorized to use the particular network services. The authenticating parties are the authentication center (AuC) in the home network and the MS. In the UMTS, the serving general packet radio service support node (SGSN) accesses the AuC to obtain the authentication data, and delegates the AuC to perform mutual authentication with the MS. Since the cost for accessing AuC is expensive, the SGSN may obtain an array of authentication vectors (AVs) at a time so that the number of accesses can be reduced. On the other hand, if the size K of the AV array is large, the AV array transmission from the AuC to the SGSN may be expensive. Thus, it is desirable to select an appropriate K value to minimize the authentication network signaling cost. We propose an analytic model to investigate the impact of K on the network signaling traffic, which is validated by simulation experiments. Then, we propose an automatic K-selection mechanism that dynamically selects the size of the AV array to reduce the network signaling cost. Our study indicates that the automatic K-selection mechanism effectively identifies appropriate size of the authentication vector array.

Reducing authentication signaling traffic in third-generation mobile network

This survey gives a comprehensive review of recent advances related to the topic of VoIP QoE (Quality of user' Experience). It starts by providing some insight into the QoE arena and outlines the principal building blocks of a VoIP application. The sources of impairments over data IP networks are identified and distinguished from signal-oriented sources of quality degradation observed over telecom networks. An overview of existing subjective and objective methodologies for the assessment of the QoE of voice conversations is then presented outlining how subjective and objective speech quality methodologies have evolved to consider time-varying QoS transport networks. A description of practical procedures for measuring VoIP QoE and illustrative results is then given. Utilization methodology of several speech quality assessment frameworks is summarized. A survey of emerging single-ended parametric-model speech quality assessment algorithms dedicated to VoIP service is then given. In particular, after presenting a primitive single-ended parametric-model algorithm especially conceived for the evaluation of VoIP conversations, new artificial assessors of VoIP service are detailed. In particular, we describe speech quality assessment algorithms that consider, among others, packet loss burstiness, unequal importance of speech wave, and transient loss of connectivity. The following section concentrates on the integration of VoIP service over mobile data networks. The impact of quality-affecting phenomena, such as handovers and CODEC changeover are enumerated and some primary subjective results are summarized. The survey concludes with a review of open issues relating to automatic assessment of VoIP.

Quality of Experience of VoIP Service: A Survey of Assessment Approaches and Open Issues

The Internet is under rapid growth and continuous evolution in order to accommodate an increasingly large number of applications with diverse service requirements. In particular, Internet telephony, or voice over IP is one of the most promising services currently being deployed. Besides the potentially significant cost reduction, Internet telephony can offer many new features and easier integration with widely adopted Web-based services. Despite these advantages, there still exist a number of barriers to the widespread deployment of Internet telephony. The most prominent one, however, is how to ensure the QoS needed for voice conversation. The purpose of this article is to survey the state-of-the-art technologies in enabling the QoS support for voice communications in the next-generation Internet. In this article, we first review the existing technologies in supporting voice over IP networks, including the basic mechanisms in the IETF Internet telephony architecture and ITU-T H.323-related Recommendations. We then discuss the IETF QoS framework, specifically the Intserv and Diffserv framework. Finally, we present two leading companies' (Cisco and Lucent) solutions to offering IP telephony services as examples to illustrate how real systems are implemented.
