Domain-specific knowledge graphs: A survey

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the latest example of the System of Systems (SoS), demanding for both innovative and evolutionary approaches to tame its multifaceted aspects. Over the years, different IoT methodologies, frameworks, platforms, and tools have been proposed by industry and academia, but the jumbled abundance of such development products have resulted into a high (and disheartening) entry-barrier to IoT system engineering. In this survey, we steer IoT developers by: 1) providing baseline definitions to identify the most suitable class of development products—methodologies, frameworks, platforms, and tools–for their purposes and 2) reviewing seventy relevant products through a comparative and practical approach, based on general SoS engineering features revised in the light of main IoT systems desiderata (i.e., interoperability, scalability, smartness, and autonomy). Indeed, we aim to lessen the confusion related to IoT methodologies, frameworks, platforms, and tools as well as to freeze their current state, for eventually easing the approach towards IoT system engineering.

Internet of Things as System of Systems: A Review of Methodologies, Frameworks, Platforms, and Tools

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging paradigm, which evolved in recent years to address the weaknesses in traditional networks. The significant feature of the SDN, which is achieved by disassociating the control plane from the data plane, facilitates network management and allows the network to be efficiently programmable. However, the new architecture can be susceptible to several attacks that lead to resource exhaustion and prevent the SDN controller from supporting legitimate users. One of these attacks, which nowadays is growing significantly, is the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. DDoS attack has a high impact on crashing the network resources, making the target servers unable to support the valid users. The current methods deploy Machine Learning (ML) for intrusion detection against DDoS attacks in the SDN network using the standard datasets. However, these methods suffer several drawbacks, and the used datasets do not contain the most recent attack patterns - hence, lacking in attack diversity. In this paper, we propose DDoSNet, an intrusion detection system against DDoS attacks in SDN environments. Our method is based on Deep Learning (DL) technique, combining the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with autoencoder. We evaluate our model using the newly released dataset CICDDoS2019, which contains a comprehensive variety of DDoS attacks and addresses the gaps of the existing current datasets. We obtain a significant improvement in attack detection, as compared to other benchmarking methods. Hence, our model provides great confidence in securing these networks.

DDoSNet: A Deep-Learning Model for Detecting Network Attacks

Infrastructure-Based Sensor Data Capture Systems for Measurement of Operational Safety Assessment (OSA) Metrics

Many mobile systems and wearable devices, such as Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) headsets, lack a keyboard or touchscreen to type an ID and password for signing into a virtual website. However, they are usually equipped with gesture capture interfaces to allow the user to interact with the system directly with hand gestures. Although gesture-based authentication has been well-studied, less attention is paid to the gesture-based user identification problem, which is essentially an input method of account ID and an efficient searching and indexing method of a database of gesture signals. In this paper, we propose FMHash (i.e., Finger Motion Hash), a user identification framework that can generate a compact binary hash code from a piece of in-air-handwriting of an ID string. This hash code enables indexing and fast search of a large account database using the in-air-handwriting by a hash table. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework, we implemented a prototype and achieved >99.5% precision and >92.6% recall with exact hash code match on a dataset of 200 accounts collected by us. The ability of hashing in-air-handwriting pattern to binary code can be used to achieve convenient sign-in and sign-up with in-air-handwriting gesture ID on future mobile and wearable systems connected to the Internet.

FMHash: Deep Hashing of In-Air-Handwriting for User Identification

As regular topology networks, grid networks are widely adopted in network deployment. Link congestion and routing path length are two critical factors that affect the delay and throughput of a network. In this paper, we study the routing problem in grid networks concerning these two factors. The main objective of our routing algorithms is to minimize the maximum link congestion. The shortest path minimum maximum (SPMM) link congestion and non-shortest path minimum maximum (NSPMM) link congestion routing problems are studied. The two problems are first formulated as integer optimization problems. Then, corresponding routing algorithms (SPMM and NSPMM routing algorithms) are proposed. For SPMM routing algorithm, the path length is optimal, while for NSPMM routing algorithm, the path is limited in a submesh. Thus, the path length can be bounded. At last, we compare the proposed routing algorithms under different scenarios with other popular routing algorithms (RowColumn, ZigZag, Greedy, Random routing algorithms). The performances are evaluated through different metrics including link congestion, path length, path congestion, path congestion to path length ratio, delay and throughput.
