Rising Tide: Gender Equality and Cultural Change Around the World

No Easy Choice: Political Participation in Developing Countries.

Masculinist contours have legitimized male domination in Indonesia’s upper public service ranks. However, some women have managed to crack the glass ceiling. A systematic search was undertaken of seven academic databases and the Google Scholar search engine to identify facilitative features of women’s career advancement through Indonesia’s echelon ranks. Fourteen articles, representing nine studies, were identified. While policy initiatives exist to increase women’s representation and career advancement, studies consistently identified little application to practice. Patterns across the studies located women’s career advancement as an individual concern and showed that women wanting careers were expected to manage the double burden of productive and reproductive life, obtain permissions from husbands and extended family, and adopt masculine leadership traits to garner colleagues’ support. Barriers frequently outweigh opportunities for career advancement; these including entrenched homo-sociability asserting that men make better leaders. Consequently, the blocking of women’s opportunities invoked personal disappointments, resulting in women’s public denial of their leadership ambitions.

Indonesian Women in Public Service Leadership: A Rapid Review

The purpose of this study is to examine the implementation of anti-corruption education in the PIAUD IAIN Takengon study program, to find out the impact of the application of the anti-corruption education model, and to see whether the anti-corruption education program model is more students' mastery of it. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects were 75 students from the VII semester IAIN Takengon PIAUD. The data collection techniques used questionnaires and in-depth interviews and were analyzed by data reduction, data presentation and data verification. The results showed that the implementation of the anti-corruption education curriculum model was not 100% pure applying the course model itself, but integrated learning indirectly as a habit to provide advice. The implementation of the anti-corruption education model is sufficient to provide an understanding for students to study corruption. The curriculum model with the subject itself is still the best model for providing knowledge to students on anti-corruption material, but with the addition of learning outside the classroom curriculum.

In this article I argue that male academics under civil servant system in a religious university still dominate the highest academic positions. This study applies logistic regression (binary and ordinal regression) since the available data, especially for dependent variable, is categorical and it does not fulfil the assumption of ordinary least square. By applying ordinal regression, gender is found to be undetected compared to other variables (age, length of tenure, and educational qualifications). Nevertheless, a statistical analysis utilising binary regression indicates that gender is a significant factor along with length of tenure and educational qualifications. The data obtained from the religious university is made up of the curriculum vitae of 749 academics in 2012 who are nearly all civil servants at the university.

The Gender Gap and Career Path of the Academic Profession Under the Civil Service System at a Religious University in Jakarta, Indonesia

This article aims to explain how and to what extent habitus and agency affect female students’ political participation. Habitus, as one of the concepts of Bourdieu, emphasizes the existence of disposition, in which actions are done without prior consideration and deliberation, and encourages people to repeteadly do similar acts simply because they are common practices in society. In contrast, agency emphasizes the ability of reflexivity and conscious thought. Applying in-depth interviews with 10 female activist and non-activist students at an Islamic university in Indonesia, the study found that the habitus in their families and neighborhoods prevented female students from obtaining equal positions to male students. Eventhough, as members of the student community, they conducted the reflexivity process, and thus had agency to act freely. This reflexivity, however, has not managed to achieve a complete patriarchal cultural change.

Habitus, Agency and Political Participation of Female Students: A Study at an Islamic University in Indonesia

Student political participation is gendered. It can be ascertained from the data presented in this paper that female students participate less actively than male students all seven forms of political participation; demonstration, signing petitions, blocking traffic, occupying buildings, boycotting, damaging public facilities, and striking. This parallels the level of participation of female students in voluntary organizations, as can be deduced from the survey I conducted, detailing the level of participation of male and female students in UIN Jakarta in 2012. The sample consists of 388 students, where216 (55.7%) are female students, and 172 (44,3%) are male. My research follows that of Seda (2002), Nurland (2002), and Soetjipto (2005) [1]. Furthermore, it supports the findings of previous researchers, who argue that voluntary organization is a s ignificant indicator of one's level of political participation [2, 3].

Gendered Student Political Participation and The Influences Of Voluntary Organizations

Indonesian Islam has its own unique characteristics as it is inseparable from local traditions and has been connected to the role of Indonesian Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah. This study observes the religiosity among Indonesian Muslims in Australia, especially in Sydney and Canberra in 2018. By conducting an online survey with 108 respondents, the study found that beside mandatory religiosity, Indonesian Muslims still very often perform nahdliyin-related religious activities such as celebrating halal bi halal, performing selamatan, requesting dua from ustadz, performing tahlilan and commemorating maulid an-Nabi. However, they prefer to pray teraweh with 11 rakaats and only very few respondents chose often and very often for teraweh with 23 rakaats. While most respondents felt being part of Nahdlatul Ulama, very few of them were an active member and a board member in Nahdlatul Ulama or Muhammadiyah. This is very interesting given the current rise of Islamism among Indonesian Muslims in Indonesia and overseas, as well as efforts made by some Indonesian Islamic organizations to spread moderate Islam throughout Western countries.
