1 is severely hindered by the differences in publication and citation habits of science fields. However, relating publication and citation indicators to proper field-specific reference standards,relative indicators can be built, which may prove rather useful in the comparative assessment of scientists, groups, institutions or countries. The use ofrelational charts in displaying the indicators broadens the scope of such assessments. Relative indicators of chemistry research in 25 countries are presented as an illustrative example.

Relative indicators and relational charts for comparative assessment of publication output and citation impact

This paper presents an overview of the general model of scientific growth proposed by D. J. de Solla Price. Firstly, the formulation of the model is examined using the seminal sources. Later, forerunners, offshoots and criticisms to the model are discussed. Finally, an integrative review using retrieved empirical studies exposes the complexity and diversity of models of scientific growth and the absence of consistent patterns.

Reconsidering Price's model of scientific growth: An overview

Figure 2 shows cumulated number of abstracts in Chemical Abstracts, Science Abstracts and Biological Abstracts, 1960-79;figure 3 showns the same data for Sociological Abstracts, International Political Science Abstracts and Historical Abstracts;figure 4,the samedata forPsychological Abstracts;and figure 5 , the same data for Librai,yand Znformation Science Abstracts.Groupings were determined, in part, by the scaleof the vertical axis,and in part by similarities in subject matter. In these cases,nocorrection was made for pre-1960 literature, so that the data points shown in figures 2, 3, 4, and 5 show cumulations relative to 1960 only. By fitting exponential functions to both the noncumulated and cumulated values, using May's method described earlier, i t was possible to obtain growth rates either incorporating or ignoring the pre-1960 literature. Indicators of research activity are suggested in order to evaluate the relative research efforts within the subfields of physics in a given country and in relation to the world average. The comparison of the internal activity indicators of various countries show that the self-regulating mechanism of scientific research tends to keep an even distribution of efforts in each of the physics subfields on a worldwide scale. Countries of high and medium economic and intellectual potential showing significant deviation in research efforts from the general group behavior were selected by an expectation methodology.

Publication indicators of relative research efforts in physics subfields.

This report describes some of the results concerning distribution of papers by country, national growth rates, distribution of papers among various journals, and publication times in several analytical journals. Publication in analytical chemistry is a dynamically growing field, with a doubling time of about 14 years, dominated by the USSR and the US, with about 12 core journals, and having a publication time (receipt of manuscript to print) of about six months. Analytical chemistry makes up about 8% of the total chemistry literature and apparently will continue to hold that share in the future. 7 figures, 9 tables. (DP)
